Thick or Thin Coon?

I was just wondering, do thick coon smell stronger or better to a hound than thin coon? . Example he/she is deadly accurate in thick coon but only 60-70% in thin coon. Maybe it's not necessarily the number of coon, but a thick-wide coon tends to leave more scent than a thin-narrow coon does. Hmmm, I wonder.....

I THINK HE MEANS A FAT COON WILL HAVE MORE SCENT THAN A SKINNY ONE.

IF THAT BE THE CASE WE NEED TO FATTEN THEM ALL UP! PLUS, THEY DONT RUN AS FAST WHEN THEY ARE MUD FAT.

HEY THAT COULD BE PART OF IT TOO. THE SKINNIER THE COON, THE FASTER THE COON, THE LONGER THE RACE THE MORE THE SCENT SPREADS OUT, MORE CHANCE FOR THE DOG TO MESS UP AND MISS?

HMMM. OPENS UP ALL KINDS OF WHAT IF'S?

The point I was trying to make by way of a little misunderstood humor is this- Why would the number of coon a dog is hunting in affect his/her accuracy?

They don't have to go as far to get a track and once they get one they don't have to run it as far. The tree checkers can go from tree to tree and get lucky. An air scent dog has a better chance of grabing one layed up. Thick coon is thick becouse of good food source and if there fat they don't run as far or as fast.

In thicker coon a dog can search out a "hot" track and not have to take any track that it finds.

WE ARE IN THIN COON HERE IN THE MTNS OF WESTERN NC. AND I'M TELLIN YOU WHAT'S THE TRUTH THIS FEMALE WE HAVE NAMED DREAM, DOES NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH DRIVE!

SHE'S NEVER TREED CLOSER THAN 1/4 MILE FROM WHERE WE TURNED HER LOOSE. SHE GETS GONE, GETS STRUCK, GETS TREED AND HAS THE MEAT. BE DERNED.

SHE WAS NOT HUNTED ALOT FOR THE LAST YEAR OR SO, BUT SO FAR DREAM HAS BEEN TURNED LOOSE 13 TIMES SINCE RUNNING SEASON OPENED IN AUGUST.

WE HAVE SEEN 8 COONS 1 POSSUM 2 SLICKS 1 DEN 1 QUESTIONABLE TREE THAT WE JUST COULD NOT SEE ALL OF.

WHEN YOU UNSNAP HER, YOU'LL PULL HER OFF A TREE SOMEWHERE. SHE WILL NOT QUIT UNTIL SHE'S TREED. SHE'S A NICE DOG, BUT SHE'S HARD TO HUNT HERE IN THE MTNS. WE JUST PRAY SHE FINDS A CLOSE ONE WHEN WE UNSNAP HER! LOL.

WE'VE NOT HUNTED HER ON FEEDER BUCKETS YET TO SEE HOW SHE WOULD FAIR ON THEM, JUST ON CORNFIELDS AND WILD COONS. ALL HER TRACKS SHES STRUCK HAVE BEEN PRETTY FAR AWAY.

Let me try to help you out a little bit.A dog being less accurate on thin coon is due to the ability of the dogs nose.A person may think they have thin coon because their dog is going deep to get treed is always not the case.I have owned dogs, hunted with dogs that were hot nosed and were get deep and get treed somewhere dogs but in reality they were probably passing up tracks that were to cold for them to smell or passing up layup coons they didnt know were in the world.Sometimes these hot nose dogs try to work tracks that were just over their head and they would gamble and just fall tree causing them to come up short being being less accurate which is what I think your case is.A dog that hunts deep or a dog that hunts close has mostly nothing to do with its ability on treeing a coon rather it be cold or hot.I myself dont like climbing these Mountains all night long but they are some places where if you dont have a wide hunting dog of any caliber you are not going to hit a track and get treed.JMO!

A common misconception about coons and hounds in areas such as Michigan (high coon populations) is that our hounds never have to hunt deep to find a coon.

There are plenty of bad weather conditions that can result in most coon not moving. Deep snow and extreme cold temperatures are an example. It is not unusual for a hound to travel over a mile to strike under extreme weather conditions. The idea that a high coon population will affect the hunt in a dog is incorrect.

The furthest I had a dog go to strike and tree a coon in Michigan was 7 miles of course we had 2 feet of snow at the time. The dog ended up treed in a farmer's front yard.

I also don't think thick or thin populations affect slick treeing. The longer I am in this game the more I believe most slick treeing dogs are made than not.

SEE THAT'S THE THING ABOUT DREAM. WE'VE HAD HER TREE LAYUPS ON THE EDGES OF THE CORNFIELDS. WE'VE HAD HER STRIKE AND TREE HOT COONS THAT WE FOUND TRACKS ON, AND WE'VE HAD HER TO RUN A COUPLE TRACKS THAT LASTED OVER AN HOUR, AND THAT WE THING WERE PRETTY OLD TRACKS.

I THINK SHE'S GOING TO RUN THE FIRST COON SCENT SHE COMES ACROSS WETHER IT'S A LAYUP AT THE EDGE OF THE CORNFIELD OR A COLD TRACK 300 YARDS UP THE MOUNTAIN.

SHE'S A NICE DOG, BUT MAN SHE MAKES FOR SOME LONG NIGHTS/WALKS SOMETIMES!

I don't think there is a difference in the smell! It's simply there's more coon tracks for a dog to run in a heavily coon populated area, which results in more scent. IMO if he/she is slicking they are simply not finishing their track, which has nothing to do with the coon population. They need to be corrected and sent on to finish the track!

I think the hunt pattern of a dog has a lot to do with how far they have to go to get a track. Like here if they go straight down the creek bed they can miss a track up on the bank. So if you have a dog that will hunt back and forth as the go they will stand a better chance of strikeing.
If a coon comes straight across a field to the creek, gets a drink and goes straight back it is easy for a dog to miss that track.
As dry as it is and with the fertilizer and everything else here right now. If they hit a track going across an empty field you better have a good cold nosed hound to tree it.

It wouldn't.

I don't know why you are seeing a difference but it isn't about coon population.

I've always wondered if a thin coon population might help a dog move a track and maybe (this is all a pretty big maybe) help his accuracy to a small degree simply because there aren't a bunch of new and old tracks laid by a bunch of coons meadering all over the place from which to sort out.

Now don't quote me on this. It's just a little midnight pontification amd probably the product of too many moonbeams to the head.

if the dog is 60 or 70% accurate on thin coon how do you know its thin coon that he misses. i don't think that the size really matters but it may be how hot the track is and he may be doing pretty good on a cold track or a lay up coon

We have thin coons in the hills and mountains of Eastern,Ky and we dont have to go a mile to get struck on a coon.If I had a dog that would have to go a mile to tree a coon in Michigan,Indiana or Ohio he would be taking a dirt nap on the river bank.

We have a pretty thick population here but it is nothing out of the ordiary to end up a mile away prety often in these bluffs....These fat coon up here move pretty fast as far as i can tell..From now through the winter they are all pretty fat and them big ole boars can run for a long time in january in the snow.

Dwils Ive hunted in Michigan and Ive also hunted in your neck of the woods a bunch of times. You guys have 10 times the coon we have.Ive hunted the swamps, the thickets, the moutains and yes in the snow.I shouldnt have said what I said,Im sorry, but I just dont think a hound should have to go miles to get treed in that country. One question I do have, when you guys do get the 2-3 ft of snow,Im assuming you wait for the hard pack before you hunt?Ive hunted in about 10 inches of snow and love hunting in the snow whenever it does snow but I think my little hound couldnt make it in 3ft of fresh snow considering it would be over his head.
