Ain't no such thing as a tree fighting dog. The other dogs just can't take any pressure. That's what I've always heard.

I have seen a couple females go thru a spell, usually between 18 months to 2 years old where they will get very aggressive on the tree, but later come out of it. Not all of them do, but if it is a female and she is any good you might want to hang in there a little while and see if she comes out of it.
It is said that having a litter of puppies will calm them down, maybe this is true, but I would not breed a mean dog to find out. Otherwise, I have to agree with the previous post.
There is a guy on this forum that suggested something to try several months back...as soon as you see this dog do anything aggressive yank it off the tree, roll it on it's back on the ground and while holding it flat on the ground get right in the dogs face and yell and growl at it.....I haven't tried this and I don't know if it will work, but I will say this; I got nothing to lose and I aint above trying anything to save an otherwise decent dog.
The other problem is that sometimes you can break a dog to not try anything while you are there...but the time you are not the dog does as it pleases. Best of luck.

Tree Fighter

Years ago I had one that was pretty bad on the tree. I shocked him, yelled at him, and tried just about everything, and was about to put him out of his and my misery. Then one night he got treed with another dog and a bad fight started.
They were in a swamp and the water was pretty deep so it took us awhile to get to them. Just before we got there it went silent so we were sure one of them was dead.
When we did get there the one dog went back to treeing but the aggressive one didn't.
To make a long story short he got his butt whipped and from that day on he never fought again even if a dog jumped on him.
Some times a good thumpin will make a dog or man loose their urge to fight.
Can't say it would work on all dogs or that it is the way to break them but it did work on him!

I tried to correct a couple of fighters. I'll never waste my time on another one. Hunt him alone or bury him.

I had a pup that was a natural from day one. First and only dog Ive ever had that didn't need trained. Treeing coons at 4 months and holding all the pressure you want to put on him. I was impressed then I saw some signs. It started in a hole and he jumped another dog. Then my old dogs would be at the tree but wouldn't get on the tree with him there. Hed just stare them down if they came close to the tree. He got worse and at 2 years old he was real good at fighting. Hes gone now. If you keep your dog you may ruin your pups and probably some friendships. I thumped mine bad enough a couple nights I was ashamed of myself, next tree same thing. Just my opinion.

First you need to determine why your dog is fighting , do you hunt with the same dogs all the time , is one dog or is he a tree jacker . do you hunt mainly by yourself and shoot all the coons to him alone. do you pet him up real good at the tree ,do you feed him right beside another dog . do you have a house dog that runs loose and agravates him. a lot of things a hunter does can make a dog want to fight sometimes correcting what you do will solve a problem of coarse with correcting the dog as well or changing what is causing the fighting , but if its just natural to it then forget it

I had one a loud natural trail & tree hound I noticed my two older hounds coming off the tree, they were both solid hounds so I set him up.I kept him on the lead until the two older hounds got treed had my buddy hold him back about 2 hundred yards while I went into the tree about 30 feet from the tree I waited while my buddy cut him loose.Sure enough he started to clean that tree out so I gave that E-collar all it had.Did this two times and I saw no good from it so I used my other training tool a 22 bullet behind the ear. I will say that some young hounds tree happy might be corected but don't wast too much time tring to light break a real mean one.

I've been waiting for somebody to say that a tree jacker causes it!

Billy Beckham

lots of times that is what gets it started and if you watch you can see that a high strung jacked up dog with a lot of energy are the ones that are tree jackers and on the other hand if you watch some of the most laid back dogs that never jack a tree are the ones that are as mean as a gator and if them two types of dogs hook up you have a big time problem.

I am not sure which part of my post you are replying to but, no, I would not and would not suggest that anyone continue to hunt and expose other dogs to an aggressive dog in an uncontrolled situation. I think this would make anyone a pretty shortsighted trainer. Further I would say that it is certainly your privilege sir to believe that "all those type dogs" need put down. One thing is for certain and make no mistake I commend and respect your consideration for other hunters and their dogs...something that is lacking these days!!!!
I believe that the gentleman who first posted the idea of rolling the dog backwards hard on the ground and scolding it meant that this be done at the first sign or instance of aggressiveness. I never took it as and didn't advocate it as something to try each time the dog acted aggressive and that the owner/trainer should just allow the dog to keep on getting up with being aggressive on other dogs.
My position is simple and unchanged...you probably wont change anything, but you got nothing to loose so why not try???

Yes mine will jump straight up and down. He doesn't want to fight that's the way he trees. The bugged eyed tree monster that wants to own where he is hugging the tree is causing the fight.
If you don't hunt a hound that can get treed alone or without backing a dog you should keep yours at home.

You ever seen a group of highly dogs, bear dogs or cats dogs. They jump all over each other while baying what ever thier game is. They are focused on the task at hand instead of each other
