How To Break Dog From Running Porcupine

HOW IN THE WORLD CAN I GET MY DOG TO STOP RUNNING PORCUPINES. THIS DOG HAS TOO MUCH GRIT AND CAN TAKE ALL THE BEATING I CAN GIVE HER AND WILL STILL TREE THEM. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED.

I broke myself out of climbing trees with beehives in them. Looks like to me she would break herself but we don't have porquepines around here so what do I know? I hope she ain't stupid for you though.

SHE IS JUST A 11 MONTH OLD DOG. SHE HAD GOTTEN IN THEM QUILLS BAD ONE TIME, NEVER RAN THEM AGAIN FOR A MONTH OR SO, AND THEN SHE SOMEHOW GOT TO THE POINT WHERE SHE WON'T BOTHER THEM UP CLOSE, BUT SHE WILL TREE THEM. SO I SHOT IT DOWN TO HER, AND LET HER GO AT IT SO SHE PURPOSELY GOT QUILLS IN HER AND THEN BEAT HER BUT BAD WITH STICK AND MY BACKSIDE OF MY HAND. ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD HAVE DONE?

Some dogs can't be broke. I know of a dog up here that was quilled many times he never did learn. Don't know what finally happened to him.

My vet said once a quill dog always a quill dog

But this is what I did and it worked for me

1st catch a Porcupine in a cage trap
I used a small bit of salt block or dry cat food for bait
to get one quick it helps to find trees or places where they
been chewing on
place the caged porky in some brush
than a while later let a buddy cut your dog into the area
while your off to side where you can watch
if he goes in on it give him time to do the right thing & let it, but if he get stupid slam him with your shocker til he gets the message have your handler get the dog and take for a walk & put him back in the box
while you move the porky to another spot & repeat the process
I like to give the dog a break in between
If you think he's had enough than have your handler lead him away
with you following 20 or so yards behind with the caged porky in one hand
& the shocker in the other if he shows he wants to come
back slam him til he stops even thinking about looking back
( if you like your handler make sure he's not touching the dog "or LOL ")
dispose of porky out & away from your dog hope this helps GOOD LUCK

I think Daryl's method would be the best chance to break a dog . It's the one I would try. Good luck.

Try putting them in a barrel together and roll them down a hill ! LOL

Not really. LOL

I'd try the shock collar/cage idea.
Sounds best to me.

Do'nt run her on rainy nights, my brother had a walker dog that ran quit a few in MI. but he realized that they ran them more on misty rainy nights. Maybe this can help.

agreed. I wouldn't do it on a pup that isn't running it's own coon. If the dog trees coon but just likes messing with porkys then get medieval on them if you have to.

Sometimes it's a phase, sometimes they take a liking to them for some screwed up reason. I have to break every dog I start because they're so thick around here. Some break easy some don't, some break themselves after a two hour quill pulling session. I've never had one I couldn't break. I've also never seen a "straight" hound that came from an area without porkys that could resist grabbing one.

I had a female that just decided she was going to tree porkys after she had over 100 coon shot out to her. She had just turned two at the time and treed them in style for about a week in hide season. At first I just leased her up and switched her but she kept at it so I shocked her. Then I shocked her and switched her but she kept on treeing them. After 6 or 7 nights of this I was losing my mind. The last straw was when I walked a mile to her through a cedar swamp. I came out on a little oak ridge and there sat another porky. That's when she really got it. I laid her up for a week then it was back to business as usual, all coon no porkys. She'd road right around them without so much as a look. I don't know if it was the "terrible twos" that some dogs go through when they just start acting like an idiot for no explained reason or if I broke her but she turned out to be the best dog I ever owned.

Good luck, I feel your pain. It sucks spending nights walking into treed porkys. Worse yet spending nights pulling quills.

i was once told that a do will go after a porky until he killed one. found out it isn't true. my blue dog just kept on killing them. got tired of paying the vet. i mean this dog would get the quills down his throat and look like a pin cushion. switched him. did it all no luck. yet i had another dog just sniff a dead porky got a few quills in her nose and it was enough for her. just don't know. depends on dog.

i did have to clear off some porkies off my land. these things can really destroy trees! seems i had an invasion of them a few years back. couldn't even hunt on my land they were so thick.
the idea of the cage and the shocker seems a good idea to me. will have to try that one.

definately dont shoot them out and shock a dog ive tried it and have wattched others try it and it dont work. i make the quill pullin the worst event they ever had so most dogs i had just treed them insted of biteing them. what has worked for me is tearing off a switch stick thin so it will curl around there belly and woopin them. and be persistant the more they do it the worst you woop em and yellin bad seem to help most hounds want to please you so some times helps. switchem and then hopefully fur them up on the next drop. but never let one get awy with it ever!! we out here are infested with em there are 8 porkys for every coon and i hate them. daryls method seems like it will work good too never thought of it! always lookin for a good method to try. todd
