Help

I have a Beagle that has 2 day old pups. She had 4 and 1 died. She doesn't seem to have much milk. Is there anything I can give the female to eat that will help her produce milk? Also I am going to try feeding the pups with an eye dropper. What should I put in the eye dropper? Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Put Some yogurt and or cottage cheese in with her feed this will help her bring some more milk down.
As far as the pups make sure they are getting some teat any little bit helps, the colostrum is what they need from momma the most.
There is a product called milk aid that will help also.
Check with your local vet and see if they can help ya out.
you can get the Small bottles from most pet places as well as milk replacer for pups DO NOT GIVE them COWS Milk.
You may want to take a WARM not HOT but Warm moist cloth and rub mommas teats down to help draw the milk down also.
i used the search funtion at the top of the page to find more info and here are the results.

Good Luck and Best Wishes for ya.

Hi John, My hound just had a litter of pups. This was her frist litter and she had some problems. I thought she wasn't producing enough mike so the vet told me to feed her a high protein diet 3 small meals a day. I feed my hound stuff like boiled chicken, boiled meat, tuna fish, hot dogs, sweet potato fries mixed in with her high protein dry food. The vet told me to make sure she is drinking tons of water, I had to put water in front of her in the whelping box as she is taking care of her pup. If the pups are not feeding you need to open there mouth and put them on the tit. Try to pull on the tits to stimulate the milk so it will produce more milk. When the pups start to feed you will not need to do this stimulation any more. keep the pups warm but not to warm. If the pups show no signs of wanting to feed you need to take them to the vet. The vet can give the pups fluids under the skin to keep them hydrated, making them stronger. If you need to feed the pups with a bottle make sure you don't put to much in there mouth, if you see it coming out of there nose then you are giving to much. the best thing to do is get the pups to feed off the mother hound. The mother hound has in her milk immunities that help the pup fight off things. John the milk will come if you give her what I said { Been there} Will if you have any doubt call your vet ASAP. Tjcrewse has very good advice to and I recommend his advice to you also. Let me know how your pups are doing Thanks, Jim

Offer her chicken or beef broth, a couple cans per day.

My wife and I used a warm wash cloth on her teats. I gave her 4 hot dogs, a couple fried eggs and a container of yogurt. 1 more pup died. The 2 that died were kind of small to start with. The female is 10 years old so that could be a contributing factor also. The 2 that are left are nursing as I type this. They seem pretty healthy. I will give her more hotdogs, yogurt and tuna in the morning brfore I go to work. Thanks for the help, I will give an update tomorrow after work.

John

So far so good. I found out the female loves tuna. Hopefully she will raise the 2 that are left. I am really looking forward to this cross and I will not breed her again. Thanks again for the help.

John, I hope your pups make it. The most powerful thing you can do is to pray and ask the lord to lay hands on these pups and ask god to give them life. keep up the good work John, don't give up on them. Thanks, Jim

I had to bottle feed an entire litter of Great Dane pups when I lost the mother during whelp. I had a litter of 11.

Be very careful if you do end up bottle feeding. The pups can aspirate (get pneumonia) very easily. I went to Tractor Supply and bought Goat Milk Supplement for baby goats. You can also put a small drop of corn syrup under the pups tongues if you see them start to fade away. This should perk them up enough to want to start suckling. Use the eye dropper to feed the first couple days and then you should be able to switch them over to a regular "Premie" human child nipple and bottles. The ones at the vets office and pet stores are expensive and the same thing. Hopefully, your pups start nursing on their own though. Let me know if you have any questions. We became pros at supplementing pups.

I should also add that out of the 11 - 8 survived which was amazing since we had to do all the work.

I just checked on the pups and they seem to be doing good. I don't think it will be necessary to bottle feed them. I just bought 16 more cans of tuna fish. She loves tuna and hot dogs. I will have to put her on a diet after she is done nursing the pups. I have said a few prayers and I am sure they have helped. Thanks again to everyone.
