how many of you raise your own meat and what do you raise

my neighbor and I are raising some barungus and long horn crosses,goats,chickens and when the market is strong enough for us to sale enough to help cover the cost and still pit food on the table, pharoah quail and rabbits and have raised hogs too

I am thinking of raising hereford hogs here is a link to info on them.

if you know anything about them,please let me know good,bad or indifferent......I cant find a breeder locally so I may have to drive to Tn. to get them

We raise beef,chichens(eggs and meat),and hogs for our freezer along with wild game,deer,wild hogs,coons,squirrels,rabbits,and turkeys.

I've always raised egg chickens but a few years ago I began doing 2 batches of meat birds per year, 1 spring and 1 summer batch. I end up putting around 30 birds in the freezer. Nothing like it this time of year when we can take out a home grown 6 lb+ bird and have a roast chicken dinner. Not including labor, it ends up being just a little savings compared to store bought but the meat is way better. The last few years I've done turkeys too. Been thinking about trying some yorkshire hogs.

I got 12 feeder pigs right now there 100lb I'm going to by a coupleBerkshire gilts and farrow my own Berkshire meat tast better to me.

It have friend that raises herford hogs. I buy two a year they say the fat is better than other breeds. I dont know for sure but it tastes pretty good.

We raise beef cows, hogs, chickens eggs/meat. 1/4 acre garden. Kill a couple deer each year, turkeys, squirrels, and rabbits. Can't stand that crap from the super market.

We have raised our own chickens for eggs/meat and wild game aswell, But last year we have added honey bees to our list we started with 3 hives and produced last fall lil over 8 gallons not bad for the first year. This year we are raising a herford steer,Fullblood Boer goats for meat and market,Dairy goat for milk and cheese,Cornish cross for meat,And doubling our bees or tripling them not sure there is a good market sold my surplus honey in 2 weeks and kept enough for ourselves also.Turkeys will be added for this thanksgiving,And a few Yorkies also for fall before deer season and we also hunt upland birds and rabbits.Now by next year a big enough garden to harvest all of our vegetables for the year. Trying to get away from store bought hormone and medicated fed animals, Plus we know what we are putting into our bodies. We all need to learn to grow what we need before the economy totally bottoms out more and more homesteaders need to think also this way, We are putting alot of unwanted extras in our diets which are more cancer causing additives to our children eat what you grow.Glad to see more changing there ways of what they are adding to the table for meals..Health is wealth and go Green all the way..

I buy a side of beef from a guy down the road when I need it, if I try to raise anything my wife names it and then we have a pet. lol

i read somewhere that guinne (sp)pigs are a good way to go. one of the best converters of grain to meat there is. rabbits are good too. i haven't done either and probably won't but i'll think about it.
