Never had the ACL problem but did have my MCL torn thanks to getting blind sided by a truck (mine) one night hunting because some idiot (me) forgot to set the parking brake for the first time and of course thats when it slips out of gear. Dr said I would have been better off having my leg broken than the ligament damage. I begged to differ, cause when your out in the middle of nowhere with no cell service I think I was better off at least crawling back in my truck and getting the clutch mashed in enough to at least get taken off and drive home although it was the longest 3 mile drive of my life in 1st gear. First visit with ortho dr was also the closest I ever came to knocking someone out when he grabbed my ankle with one hand and put his other on the outside of my leg and bent it to a near 90 degree angle to the side and said "You know it aint suppose to bend that way" like Im some sort of complete moron or something. Any way I was scheduled to be out of work for 12 weeks minimum and return to light duty which anyone with half a brain knows that 99% of the time if your not hurt at work then work dont have anything for you until you get a full medical release and after the 12 weeks then 6 weeks rehab. Was in a leg immobilizer for 3 weeks and got impatient and at home would take it off and do as much as possible on it. Doc told me I needed to slow down but what does he know about anything so on the 4th week got a hinged brace and by week 7 doc told me I was well enough along that therapy would possibly set me back so I got my full release to get back to work but still had to wear the hinged brace for another 3 months. That was back in 2008 and even after all this time I am still not used to every single step I take my knees pop. Im still not used to the grinding under my kneecap every time I sit in a chair, climb stairs, hills, or a ladder, or squat down for something. Im still not used to every time there is a front that moves in no matter how small it may be that I can barely move. Im still not used to not being able to run or jog like I used to cause I know Im going to pay for it the next day(s). I'll also never know how much better, if any, shape my knee would be in had I taken the entire 18 weeks off for recovery and rehab. Needless to say, my advise would be take the recommended time to heal, dont get impatient, and do it right cause I know that a damaged ACL is far worse than a damaged MCL.
