Hey Melanie,
The potentially smaller number of pups with an AI is usually when using frozen or fresh chilled. There's at least one B&T breeder up your way who does "fresh transfer" and I don't think it reduces litter size at all. 
The dilemma you're in is making sure you get pups this time vs trying to reduce litter size (been there, done that <tho' not an AI>, you had one of the pups...lol).
As you've already mentioned, you could try AI'ing late.....or early. I suppose you could also gamble with only using part of the collection, letting it sit around for a while before using it, chilling it and then warming and using, or any other number of creative tactics that will probably amuse your vet and friends.
Of course Murphy's Law says the harder you try to reduce litter size, the more likely you are to wind up with 14 pups.
