Just bought a couple good walker pups. One I am planning to show and the other for hunting.
They are both young, 4 months.
At what age do most start working/training for show?

Also, has anyone read Walk With Wick?

The walk with wick books are a good reference but he says in the book its just some of the stuff that works for him.Good luck with the pups just be patient with them and they will be fine.

Question, why only hunt 1 and show the other? I think you should hunt and show both. You may be suprised. This is just my opinion but I believe coonhounds should be able to do both. I'm not saying I could win the national shows with any of mine, or the world hunt, but I enjoy doing both with mine.

I have been thinking about doing both now after joining this. I already planned on hunting the show after a few years. I have heard doing both effects the dogs show.

if anything it keeps the dog in shape and fit. i like to see working dogs on the bench. the way i look at it is they were bred to hunt. so hunting should be first. showing is fun and a dog that has it all is something to be proud of. i care nothing for hounds that are never hunted only showed. this does nothing for me at all. i know many who just show and we are good friends, but they know how i feel about hounds never being hunted only showed. but like everyone else, this is my opinion. my preference thats all. I agree with you. I think coonhounds need to be hunted not just showed. I am leaning more and more into hunting and showing, not just showing for a few years then hunting for the rest.
One question - what comes first in training?

obedience
a dog that don't have any manners and don't listen is hard to work with. i like doing the basic things, heal, load, come, break to whistle, etc. i have always had better results with a dog that had a good handle on them. i hunt curs and hounds, and the curs have a much better handle than hounds. cur aim to please and hunt for you. hounds hunt for themselves, but with proper yard work, they can hunt for you as well. best of luck with your new pups

One question - Planning on going to a show in Columbus IL at the end of the month. I have heard from a few that you shouldn't bring young pups because they might catch something. True?
Keep in mind, I know anywhere a dog can catch something, but is it like a "code" not to bring pups to shows?

Just make sure your pups have had all their shots and you'll be just fine. Just go and enjoy yourself.

a show dog in my opion and in alot of judges as well want well muscled/toned dogs on the bench n wat better way to get that tone? hunt them but as u will c there a r bunch of guys will hunt n show their dogs i know i do n as well as a bunch of other guys

i start workin with my pups as soon as i get them all their shots and on the ground and i agree teach them obidence first i love workin with young pups i start then as soon as i can but be careful u can burn them out i have did it work with them a little every otherday thats just how i do it now
