Bluetick Question!

I am looking to get back into coonhounds. In the past I have had Plotts and a few English. I am considering going with the Bluetick breed. My question is how do they compare to the Plott and English breeds? What is their personality like, as well how are they around a kennel? I dont want a breed that will be kennel pacers, or heavy barkers. I would like to find a dual purpose hound to hunt and show at the National Levels. Suggestions on a good bloodline or breeder!

Bud you will realize real quick that everyone on here knows the best lines of dogs my advice. Go to a few local clubs and spectate a few casts.

Good luck but if I were you I would stick with english dogs or try to a holstein.

Blueticks are just as different according to the breeding as any other breed of coonhound. Do your homework and you will find something you like.

I agree with Mr. Johnny. One thing I like about blueticks is that it's easier to "cross over" a show dog with a hunting dog. In other words, if you've got a well made "hunting dog" you can still win at decent shows with it. Not quite as much separation between hunt and show lines as there is with, say, Walkers.

I think the bluetick breed has done a good job with not "specializing" lines, just my opinion. I hope that won't change now that some of the all-breed exhibitors are interested in buying blueticks to show.

I do both show and hunt Walkers as well, and in general my blues are less of a pain in the butt around the house. Not as hyper and yappy, and generally more laid back. They can be stubborn, but are generally eager to please. I had to bring one of my blueticks to work with me a few times when I was going to show handling classes, and he handled it extremely well to be a strictly "outside dog." Most definitely would have only attempted that with one or two of my Walkers LOL....

I remember some years back a local 'Girl' saying Ron Taylor let her handle his 'Northern Blue Levi" on one of the casts. She said she had never seen a dog handle like that. Ole Levi Won the Classic that year. Nobody can deny the Coon Dog he was... and to handle like that.

I've always admired Blueticks and have had a few but my luck was they were noisy around the house . They listened while I was home but got me in trouble while I was gone to work, just wouldn't accept any outside noise or whatever without barking at it.

Like any of them, there are golfball's in'um all. Just a matter of finding the rite ones that fill your bill. There's plenty out there. Take your time & shop around. You'll be happier in the long run that you did.

Best of luck in your search!
