split toe nail

Had my two year at the vet a month or so ago for a swollen front big toe..she checked it out, said the toe nail had split. Gave me anit-inflammatory and antibiotic and said to leave him up for 10 days. I did all that, but today it's swollen again and his carries it around. Anyone else have this trouble? I have him in a gravel pen and he does dig some.
Any suggestions? Are there any old-timey cures for this?

epoxy the split nail with super glue 2 or 3 times a week until it grows out. put the dog back on antibiotics. i had it happen before. but you have to keep up on the glue until the cracked part is growed out far enuff to clip it.

I wondered about the toenail removel...this is the second time he has had injured it.
I'll try the vet's treatment one more time, then may have it removed.

Yep, and keep the nail very short. The old Tucker dog split his nails regularly- he treed so hard and was always jacking around the tree so much that often at the end of the night he would have a split nail. When we were at a two night hunt and needed to hunt him again the next night, I would buy super glue and dental floss. Make a loose knot with floss, put a drop of super glue on nail [just a little bit- don't let any get in the opening], slip the knot over the nail up as high as possible. Tighten the knot up, and start wrapping the dental floss around and around the nail [and through the drop of glue]. Having the glue there will keep the floss from sliding up or down on the nail. Make twenty to thirty loops around- in a nice smooth pattern working your way out towards the tip and then back again. Put another drop of glue where the floss comes to an end. You have now made a mini cast for the nail. I have had these stay on for weeks- long enough for the nail to heal underneath.
