1) How to get a young dog (18 mo ) to hunt wider ?


A. by his self
B. with deep hunting dogs
C. it's bred in them ( which I believe)
D. different answer

They say mules help but I don't have the places to hunt off of a mules.

its got to have a little heart to start with if it want go
some with older dogs your in trouble.breeding helps
but still all dont get the same gene.

Sometimes helps to take them by themselves and stop a ways from the woods and make them go the distance to actually get to the woods. Then increase the distance a little each time. Worked pretty well on a female I had but might depend on the hound.

C all the way, if they ain't got it they ain't got it and believe me the ones that got it are born with it! Just like a car you can adjust here and there and help out but the motor is the same and you can't change dogs motor!!! Do you know how the ancestors hunted? If they had the go then maybe he will get it but if they didn't have it your livin on a hopemand prayer! If it's a she back her up To quick are I will get you a pup out of quicksilver sister I guarantee you ain't got to do nothing to make them go but unsnap the leash! theses thrasher and. Queenie pups are already shown to have big motors and ole hardwood Fred has got the motor so just c,moon up and choose your poison! Ole quicksilver sister will make you wish she had a little less in the tank!

I had one here while back. Started her alone cause she would not go with other dogs. Cut em and shed be alone on everything. Would not go 300 yards and be back. She hit a deer one night. Run it a long ways. This was just after I had whipped her trying to make her go. I thought maybe it helped her but the next night. Same thing. She just didnt have IT... I'll not mess with one 2 years next time either lol...My votes C...

TAKE PUP TO WOODS. TURN HIM LOOSE. WHEN HE COMES IN PUT HIM IN BOX AND TAKE HIM HOME. KEEP DOING THIS HE WILL NOT WANT TO BE PENNED UP AND WILL START HUNTING DEEPER AND LONGER.

Thinner coons is the answer. Why would you want a dog goin farther than it takes to get on a coon? If he has hunted out the place you want to hunt and comes in what's wrong with that? If you wanted him hunting a mile away , Why didn't you take him there?

They either have the drive or not. Some will hunt a short distance alone or with company. Some don't care and go to the ends of the earth. Doesn't make either kind a bad dog, just might not be what you are looking for but another man may love a dog that doesn't leave the country. I have had young dogs that would hunt close and as they treed coons and I would knock a few out they would hunt longer and deeper to find one.

from what i see as far as the breeding , they are straight line hunters from it being bred in.. or they have some side to side hunt in them from the breeding.
as far as making a dog go deeper, the more you can make a dog want a coon,the farther it will go looking for one,the longer it will stay out looking...the more it wants a coon the harder it will hunt for them.
you would be surprised at how much more a dog will do in every department by somehting as simple as not letting them touch the coon after you shoot it out. alot of people tie em back and let the other dogs have the coon. but try it with the dog while hunting it alone for a couple weeks and look at the differance in the dog.
giving a dog the coon don't make them want them nearly as much as seeing them flop around just out of thier reach and then being dragged away.

I don't know your location. I do know its hot everywhere right now. How deep he's hunting right now may be affected by the heat. If he's still doing the same when it cools off and get moisture on the ground it may be time to send him to another home. 18 mos is still young. I believe this heat can hurt a young dog more than it can help em. Good luck.

To some extent its bred in them, like everything else....

Hunt them alone.

Never leash them anywhere but at a tree.

Never call them in.

Its a whole lot easier to take a hound that will go deep to start with and shorten them up than it is to take a hound that wont hunt and make them get deep.
