Funny story...

I bought my dog as a 3 month old pup. I had 2 other dogs when I got him.

The old lady

Was 6 when I brought Spook home.
The little bulldog was 2

There was an obvious pack order. I was top dog and the old lady was number 2. Then the little bulldog fell in at number 3 and Spook was at the bottom. Well as time went on the dogs fell right into who was where in the pack order. The old lady had been with me and though alot. She would not let a stranger near anything that was "ours" unless bossman said it was ok. Well Spook picked up on who was important and who was not. I was single at the time and I worked and spent time with the dogs. It was a RARE thing for me to do anything else.

Time again goes on and the old lady passed away and the little bulldg had to move on. This put Spook right in at number 2.

Spook took right in where the old lady left off. Spook will have a strangers arse unless bossman says it is ok. I got married and the wife brought a step son. Spook, not realizing he was bumped down to number 4, had a rough time with the wife and her being above him.

Well we had a baby girl and now Spook was again bumped down. Not knowing how Spook would act he stays outside and is fed and handled by the top dog... me. He will not let anyone else feed, walk or mess with him unless bossman is there. Take him to the woods and he forgets EVERYTHING except that A. I am still bossman and B. were after coons. It doesn't matter who leads him, cuts him, pets him up... He is coon minded.

Well the step son was pretending to eat the babies feet tonight... Spook was in the bedroom sleeping in the closet. Spook came out into the living room and let the boy know that was not a good idea. If the wife pretends to "get" the baby or anything that comes off as bening ill towards her... Spook is right there to let her know there will be none of that. Yet bossman can do what eer he pleases and Spook lays fast asleep.

Folks I never tried to get this dog to act the way he does or promotoe it. Frankly he has come pretty close to getting a bullet in the head. It just amazes me how he can look at anyone but me as an equal. Then the baby shows up and he puts her above himself.

Ol'Spook is a coondog and my little buddy... those are the ONLY things that keep him here!

I guess maybe he knows she will be a Cooner to the bone like her dad!

Dogs have to know where they fit. I would have a hard time if I had one that was growlee with family but as long as no one is bit and the household is not up in arms I guess. You have to keep a closer eye on protective dogs is the deal and you sound like you do. Years ago we kept a mini dachshund and that little squirt was a good guard dog but as he got older that got stronger. He finally died of Michelin fever under a Chevy Suburban at 11 years old.
