How young have you bred a female?

I have a young gyp here that is 9 months old and just came out of heat. I figure to breed her next time she comes in because there is a stud out there that I want to breed to before he starts shooting blanks (he's already 12). This female is already treeing coons on her own and I think she is ready but I was just wondering if it was a good idea to breed her as a 1 year old. I think I remember hearing that you should wait until they are 2 for some reason.

I have bred on 2nd heat cycle, everything turned out great. My dogs mother was also 17 months when she had her first litter, so I know it does work. I believe it was the first heat that they say not to breed in, mainly because the female isn't fully grown and matured .

I think 18 is the legal age in PA.

Yep, Last time I checked, it was.

You are not going to 'hurt' your dog by breeding her too young, but think on this, is a 12 yr. old girl ready to become a mom, just because she can do so physically? I know, I know, all those 'mutt' dogs have puppies that young and go on to reproduce lots more 'mutt' dogs, but if you REALLY care about the well being of your dog, then you will wait til she is mature enough to handle being a mom. If the 'old dog' dies before that time, find a son that is close to what he was and breed to him.

She'll be good

Her 2nd heat she should be fine. If she is at lest 17 months old
she "SHOULD" be mentaly & physicaly mature. Remember females
usually mature mentaly faster than males.

Im not a fan of breeding hounds until they are a coondog, but as far as the health issues go breeding them young is actually easier on them. The rib cage and pelvis springs easier, the bones are softer, and recovery is quicker.

As far as PA. goes it wasnt that many years ago that 12 was old enough and cousins were fair game. LOL.
