They are OK but I like cedar better. Cedar is a natural deterrent to many bugs and insects, including fleas.

i use conveyor from my work when they change it out i take the old stuff line my kennels with it but as for cold dont really get cold here

I notice a difference in fleas when I use cedar over straw or pine.

I think were most people mess up with the cedar chips is leaving them in the houses too long and after a while all the cedar oil will be wore away and gone and they are basically just like any other wood chip at that point. I change mine about once a month and refresh the houses with a couple handfuls of fresh cedar shavings about once a week.

always liked cedar shavings but had a cleaned up walker dog once and he slobbered and got wet and where he lay on the cedar shaving it discolored his white. So, I use pine shavings most time now although for the colored dogs, I would still use cedar.

No matter what kind of shavings you use....once they get old and broke down and dirty....yep fleas will infest them. You got to change them ever so often for any shaving to be at its best. Goes for hay or straw as well.

have to be careful with mold/mites with the hay & straw...esp if dog is allergic to as one of mine is.

Cedar is an allergen so it can be hard on some dogs. I had one that would swell up alot when exposed to it.

When I built my kennel I bought those dog beds from Lion Country Supply and so far they work great can take them apart and wash them the dogs are up off the ground. The dogs never come out of their house but to go to the bathroom or go hunting and eat in the winter I put a 2in. thick piece of foam under it and the cold from the concrete doesnt get to them. The houses are in my garage and everything is insulated.

Cedar will burn the skin when it's wet. Also, cedar can irritate the nasal passages & eyes. Cedar does NOT reduce fleas, if the fleas are present & hungry, they'll still migrate to your dogs for a good blood meal. Cedar is overrated as a flea repellent - I fell for that belief many years ago thinking I was keeping fleas in control, used cedar in pens & doghouses & had the worst flea infestation I have EVER experienced.
Use Bayer T&S or Dominion T&S & you'll never have a flea problem again. You'll also save a lot of $ because you won't need flea sprays & dips ever again. I use pine shavings (I live in an area called "Pineywoods" and never have had a dog suffer "burns" from pine shavings.
I'm relating EXPERIENCE, not just repeating something someone told me.
