last nights hunt with skeet and buzz

well, it started out with good family conversation, looking over the house rehabilitation project my buddy has going and checking out an eagles nest being built literally, in his back yard. as the sun was going down, of course, i started getting nerved up. here we go. hoot hoot. alright.we got the collars on and the dogs loaded up and out we go. of course, skeet is tellin us his excitement also. we thought we remembered everything, lol. anyways, we drive back this field, and the whole way i am asking questions. what should i expect from skeet and the whole gamut of excitable questions after that. we get to the wood line, unload, and cut them loose. we walked in as the dogs worked, and i was real happy skeet went out huntin with a new dog right off the bat. gone, oh yeah, likin it. after a little while, we hear buzz open on a track, and for sure after that, skeet. man, you cant get me off cloud nine at this point. of course, i wacked my buddy in the arm saying, that was skeet?!?! yep he says, that's skeet. so far, all our training is coming out. we listen to the dogs for awhile, bs about simple stuff and remember, oh crap, we dont have the bug spray. lol. we got BIT UP. but at least he remembered to put it in the truck about 500 yards away. oh well, we are huntin. all of a sudden, we check the garmin and buzz is coming back. what the heck. then he is beside us and skeet is still out huntin about 150-200 yds. out. this dog buzz, is a darn good hound. he couldnt figure out what was going on with him. it was real strange, this dog was just out a few weeks ago and treed three in record time. finally, buzz gets gone again and we hear him pick up a track and skeet comes back in to us. what the heck. then he gets gone on his own. finally, we hear skeet , open on track, oh yeah, and then a high pitch , how did my dog turn into a girly girl, yip. no offense to the walker people, but i asked my buddy, when did he turn into a walker? lol, any ways, he started treeing his full heart out and sure enough the garmin is saying the same thing. treed. we wait and then start to him. after about 100 yards through the thickest, wettest, buggiest stuff it gets quiet. i am talkin thick, a big slashing. anyways we think they are together and after a couple of minutes of wondering why skeet stopped we figure out buzz has a different track and skeet is workin on his own too. these dogs split and then we started losing signal with the garmin off and on cause of all the clouds, and the incoming rain, lol. we just had to listen. after awhile we got buzz about 600 yds and still on track, skeet kept out between 150-350 yds. workin. skeet treed again. and stopped, what the heck. now i am starting to get upset. then, the rain started. and buzz is 800 yds. out. skeet finally checks back in and the steam is rising off of him and his tongue to his knees. skeet takes back off, not 100 yds. off he opens again, maybe we might be able to shine something tonight besides a way out of the monstrous downed tree tops all around us. then the rain starts. it felt good for sure cause we had a sweat worked up and i dont know if it was from the walkin or the swattin, lol. then he stopped again, we got close enough to see him back and forth checkin trees. that's when the rain REALLY HIT. ok, chock it up for the night, get skeet and lets get to the field and get a read on buzz. have you ever walked behind someone through real thick stuff , watch them trip, know they are mad at their dog(i know this cause the tritronics came out a few times) giggle softly to yourself and then trip over the same dang tree. i had to laugh out loud. i tried to cheer him up even though we were in a torrential downpour now and soaked and still out one dog. at least we had one dog. mine, lol. we FINALLY get to the field and were debating to send me and skeet to the truck and i told him , we came in together, we will go out together. we got a read on the garmin and over 600 yds. later we got his dog. the rain never let up til we got back to the truck, always happens that way with us.
we dropped at 930 pm and the truck clock said 1245am when we finally got back to it. i still had an hour to drive home.
but you know what, i had a great time. i really did. wish we wouldve treed, but just being out there and getting to listen to the pup that i have raised, was great.
we have alot of boot time planned for the woods. i am proud because skeet can get gone on his own and be solely independant. he can pick up his own track, and he checks in but he can also work with other dogs without any issue at all, plus, HE IS SOOOOO LOUD. wonderful bawl mouth. wonderful. at 350+ yds. with wind and rain, i can hear him clear.
never did figure out what buzz got after cause he isnt trashy, we got to thinkin coyote or fox maybe. he was unnerved when he came into us and stayed there for a couple minutes.
anyways, til my next adventure with skeet,
kelley
ps, skeet and i were whooped when we got home. that's when you can tell you had fun, you sleep in.

ok, john and i just talked. for some reason, he thinks buzz was running a coyote and i think he is right. gonna cure that one. and we think skeet was bumpin deer. didnt run the track long but he did the "walker" yip , and that has never ever happened before with coon and skeet. now i know what to listen and look for. i am just thankful that i can head this problem off at the pass cause skeet didnt run the track long at all.
alot of good things came out of last night even though some might not think so. alot of good things.

skeet is going to be 14 mos. heading onto 15 mos. old. when i am done with him, i will be proud to say that i can trust and rely on him completely.

it is a neat thing when the dog comes into you steaming from working and looks up at you still tail waggin as if to say, give me a minute, just checkin in with ya, and then i will get it and be gone again. and sure enough, be gone again.

we are making progress.

kelley

Bobcat

I could have been a bobcat. Them suckers don't like to stay treed and will make big circles. Most coondogs will run a bobcat from time to time.

Most times when they run deer
Ain't no doubt in it. They run the crap outta them. Id say it was not deer. Keep ol skeet in the woods. He will make something.

thanks ga dawg, i dont think it was deer either. not at all. been doing some reading and thinking. all i know this pup has got brains. he can run with any dog or without. he tends to do his own thing even with other dogs around. i like it. he checks in about every 30 or so min. now, and is gone again. he is a med. hunter, which i really, really love. his highest range last night was about 500 yds.
gotta hit the woods with him. he sure is my buddy. and he lets me know with that "come here mom" kind of bawl mouth. and just like a kid, it sure is loud..lol
