Acknowledged Breeds

Hi, I'm totally new to this wonderful world of pedigree dogs. My husband recently purchased a beautiful min pin puppy, which I was told was registered and had a pedigree. When we recieved the paperwork we found she was registered with America's Pet Registery. My question is - Is APR one of the registeries recognized by UKC? We are interested in showing her and will be starting obedience classes this week but found we can't get her into a conformation class unless she's registered with the kennel club thats sponsoring the class. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks.

P.S. I've also checked with Garry Garner, Executive Director of America's Pet Registry, Inc. I've posted his response below:

We appreciate hearing from you and your interest in APRI conformation shows.
Unfortunately, we do not have classes or shows in your area at this time. We are very interested, however, in establishing ourselves in shows in the Northeast. All we need is a club or official organization to sponsor a show which we can sanction.

We have recently employed a full time show coordinator whose job is to help with shows outside the Midwest (where all our shows have been thus far). She is free to work with existing clubs in establishing shows in other areas.

If there is a club of pet owners and/or breeders who register with APRI--or who is willing to dual register their AKC dogs with APRI--we will be glad to help launch an APRI show. If there is no current club, perhaps a few owners could get together and form one. Our Director of Operations, Marcus Richmond (mer@aprpets.org) will be glad to furnish basic information on forming a club suitable for APRI shows.

We look forward to working with you and others in the future even if not as soon as you would like. We understand your desire to show and also your need to find a club, whether APRI or not, to host a show for you and your dog.

Sincerely,
Garry Garner, Executive Director, America's Pet Registry, Inc.

Ok, I thought that might be the problem. This is sad because she's an absolutely beautiful min pin and I would love to breed her at least once but because of where her pedigree is registered I may not be able to find a mate for her. And if I enter her in obedience or agility competitions I have to have her spayed.

What you could do is ask for special consideration from our Single Registration Committee. Take pictures of the dog and send everything you have on t he dog. It's worth a shot!

OK, thanks! Is there a form I should download from here to send in with the paperwork?

I understand but unless she is registered by a reputable registry, she really shouldn't be bred anyway. I'm sorry, I know it's hard to understand when you have a nice dog. I'm sure you don't want to be part of the pet overpopulation in the country and that's what would most likely happen if you bred the dog.

My advice is to love the dog, give it a fine home, spay or neuter it and enjoy the dog and our working events.

Thats exactly why I'm trying to have someone look at her and see if she is good for conformation shows or even if I can get her in one. She does have a pedigree and a Champion in her background but if she doesn't follow the standard then we'll definately have her spayed.

Know that most "puppy mills" are now using APRI as their registry. Seeing that registry should send up red flags in anyone buying a puppy.

Since I bought her at American Kennels (Pet Store in NY) I assumed she was AKC registered but thinking back, they never actually came out and said the name of the registry. But the pedigree I've received goes for 5 generations and she does have a Champion in her background. And with the email I posted above I see that they do have shows but only in the mid-west at the moment.
