If the judge is knowledgeable about function and movement then it is much more than a "beauty padgent".
Most coonhounds DO NOT run long and hard enough for bad conformation to really take effect. We have coonhounds that can not hold up to a long run. If you watch dogs running together you can see a big difference between the dogs with good conformation verses the dogs with bad conformation.
Look at deer, fox, coyote, and bear hounds if you want to see good confirmation. These dogs must run for hours on end and the ones with bad confirmation don't often get bred because they seldom rank as good dogs.
