I started with my Dad when I was about 7 yrs. old. So I guess I been chasing coonhounds for about 48 years. Pops hunted grade redbones and Black & Tans back then. We got our first taste of English when a school buddy of mine gave me a grade English Bluetick when I was in the 6th grade. Talked Pops into letting me have it and I started that pup with Pops ole Black & Tan female. So I guess I been hunting English, All English, and nothing but English for about 43 years now. And thats not all, the Hooper Ridge Hounds I hunt today go back to that very first grade English dog that my buddy gave me.

Don't know if you call that dedication or stupidity but I'm still waiting for the man that can show me I was completely wrong for sticking with this line of English.

Oh by the way, that first grade English dog I started with was 1/2 English and 1/2 Redbone. On the English side His Great Grandpa was a dog called Kirkbride's Blue Smoke. Smoke was (I believe) related to Vanzant's Sam as I think Smoke was out Marie's Blue Nell which I think was also Vanzant Sam's mother, (I Think??)

At any rate it looks like I'm too dumb to quit now!! Ha! Ha!

................................................................................
been coonhunting since 1970..

first papered dog was a grandson of house's cheif,,

makes it rough trying to find the right Coondog after that..
but alot of money/dogs and time and i have bred some now that are a close 2nd and dont have to be hunted 30 days to tree a coon on the 31st day,,lol

due to too many miles and wear/ tear on this body ,i may not have a lot of hunting time left,,

so you all be carefull and enjoy it while you can.

Way TOO Long

56 years and counting. Just can't seem to give it up. After going to my first night hunt in 1970, I can't seem to give those up either!! Take care, Ron.

I can't remember the first time grandpa took me coon huntin', I reckon I would have been 6-7 years old. By the time I was 13-14 years old, I had walked enough beans and tasseled enough corn to get me a hound pup. It was a Redtick I called Rattler. I reckon that would have been sometime around 1963. That would make it 47+ years. Too many to remember.

Back in the day, they hired young guys to walk the beans and hoe out the weeds and volunteer corn instead of using roundup like they do today. We detasseled seed corn so they could make the hybrid corn. I sarted working helping a fellow build apartments when I was 16 for $1 an hour. He gets $600 or more a month for those same apartments today.

The coon hound types have changed a lot since then. There were very few "registered dogs" around back then and good track dogs were plentiful but few tree dogs. It is just the opposite today.
