??? About Starting A Free Pup To Youth Program

When I was in high school a older man where I live started a program for kids that wanted to show cows where if the kid would show the cow for 2 years and join the local FFA he would buy a cow of the kids perfered breed and give it to them this is how I got my start with cows... I was wondering if any one thinks this would be something good to start with kids that are interested in coonhunting and if so do you have any suggestions...I for one would be willing to give a kid a pup if he would hunt it as I know many of you already do

the ukc had a program through the hunting retriever club several years ago that a youth would write a small essay and send in. The ukc would then get youth in touch with a breeder of the youth's preferred breed. The breeder would give the youth a puppy with the stipulations that they were not to be sold, they had to be registered with YRP in front of the dogs registered name, and the dog could not be fixed. But that was just with the retriever breeds as far as I can remember. I am now 21 and still have my youth retriever program dog and he is almost 7.

yep I just checked they do still offer it under the hunting retriever club. If you go to the ukc home page and then under hunting programs go to hunting retriever club. at the hunting retriever club page scroll down and it should be at the bottom of the page and have a link to click to get more info.

It sounds good on paper but pups are such a crapshoot with coonhounds, maybe start something with a 5+ year old coontreeer. Something that is really gonna get that kid fired up and want to go to the woods. It doesn't have to be a world beater just something thag will tree a coon and listen to a kid. Add in a stipulation that if they don't want it any more they have to call the guy that donated it.
