comp. hunt question

Dogs are cast,A comes back in 10 min.,B,C,D are out hunting,no dogs are struck.15 working on and off on A,still nothing opens, dogs B,C,D are at best 1 hour dogs, one handler want a time out, three don't.Guide says we should be able to hear dogs if they open anywhere he has permission to hunt. Now the question,do you allow dogs to keep hunting and wait for them to come in if not struck,or do you call time out to find the dogs, taking the chance of being scratched by the hour.I think calling time out penalizes the dogs that are out hunting for a strike. Most folks in my area thinks this is only burning up hunting time, and you should have a trained 10 min. feeder bucket dog.Remember no dogs are open, you can't call time for interference,(posted land) because no dogs have opened, how do you know where they are.I know my opinion, but Don't really know what the rules say.

If you aint heard from mine in an hour..Might as well call time..They are out of hearing..Aint coming back...Heck in 30 min of not hearing them I get antsy!! I'd want to call time to find a better place to finish the hunt.

Well, the rules are very straight forward, you can't call timeout under any circumstances without a majority voting to call time assuming you are hunting under a hunting judge. Not even with interference, not even with ANYTHING. No majority, no timeout.

Being a UKC event where you need plus points and usually a lot of them, I'd be in favor of calling time even with the one hour rule to worry about because it don't sound like you are getting a cast winner doing what you are doing. But all good reasons to call time are moot if you don't have that majority.

Instead of time outin I'd be scratching mine permanent. If a dog hunts for an hour and ain't found a coon he better be close to getting back to my feet. Differentstrokes for different folks. I can 't hardly stand a straight line go yonder any more. Why do the rules encourage breeding that kind of dog? Everybody is complaining of permission tracts getting smaller but still breeding 20,000 acre dogs . Where I hunt I don't have to worry about it but I want a dog hunting for me not me for a dog. I won't tolerate one not going hunting either.

Dwayne,no I wasn't.where I live it is not un common for 2 coons to win a hunt,if you don't have a dog that will hunt, the odds are not in your favor.I never said anything about a straigt line dog,I was speaking about dogs that hunt out and back or a circle if need be.

I had this happen on a nite hunt once. The guide took us every where the dogs should have been. But after 1:15 of time we finally got the cast to call time out. With the trackers we found the dogs in the section behind us. They had crossed a road and two main rail lines and were approching a very busy hiway.

Dogs can cover way to much ground in an hour to wait that long in most cases.

I'm not completely sure I understand all of the question, especially the part that states (dogs BC&D are at best 1 hr. dogs) but if I'm interpreting that statement correctly, you are saying that dogs B,C, & D will not hunt more than 1 hour, but you are not saying they have already hunted 1 hour.

If that is the case, then I'm of the opinion that you have no reason to call time out, therefore you must allow the time to run & continue to wait for a dog to strike. If your guide tells you the dogs are most likely still on land that he has permission to hunt, and the dogs are in no danger, then no where (that I know of) in the rule, does it give anybody the authority to call time out.

I don't believe you can call time out, even with a majority, unless you meet the criteria outlined in the rules under section 8 (A-I) section.

Well section 8 (c) If new ground must be found to finish cast and
more than 15 minutes is required or have to move to
new area by vehicle, call time out immediately

If my dog hasnt struck in an hour I would think its time to find new hunting ground but it stills has to be majority to call timeout
