Theres not a ton and most hunt them on squirrels....i've got a couple that are pretty good, but realize a cur is not gonna perform like a hound, i'll get some slack for that comment but day in and day out a hound will tree more coons etc...you'll look far and wide for a good cur coondog, but when you get one you'll really have something

Might not be many in Minn. I don't know. Have seen ALOT of them in Ohio. LOTS of top cur and treeing cur COON DOGS out there.

jim give georgewood a shout. 507 279 4444. he will be running a cur or two at your state hunt the end of the month, check them out, iam told he runs with lots of hounds and holds his own.

Don't know of anyone in Minnesota that has any curs but Loyd Frisbie here in Michigan is going to be having a few litters of BMC's real soon. He has a website under Pine River Kennels.

Cur12 I have to disagree with you there.

I've had Blackmouth curs for 18 years and they tree alot more coon then the hounds I've run with. I've had alot of well trained hounds over the years that were good coon dogs, don't get me wrong. The curs run with their head up, not track to track. You will tree alot more coon alot quicker with a BMC then a hound. They also tree alot more layup coon. I've killed as high as 22 coon in a night with my BMC's roading.

Depending on your definition or what you are looking for in a dog I would have to agree with Teto over Curs12 on this.....

If your are looking to put maximum number of pelts on the stretcher in the most efficient manner I would have to go with a cur.

If you like cutting from the tailgate and listening to a good chase and aren't afraid to go deep a hound is the way to go.

If your definition is a KC scorecard the hounds are probably going to win 8 out of 10 times. If looking at fur with the least amount of steps taken I would say it is the other way.

Personally I got sick of walking past coon sitting up on the way to my dog so I switched to curs and hunt a timber more thoroughly now.

That being said, I live in an area with a strong coon population and generally a dog shouldn't have to "get deep" to find a coon. If I lived where coon were thin, a hound that got deep would probably be far better than a cur.

Just like hounds, you can find whatever you are looking for in a cur if you hunt long enough. And just like hounds there is a lot of junk curs out there and the really good ones are rare.

There are hot nosed close huntin' hounds and hot nosed close huntin' curs. Let's face it a coon dog is a coon dog regardless of breed. I've had cur dogs that would get as deep as any hound get treed and stay all night long. Run cold tracks in the snow or around water and get treed and have the meat. But what is really nice is when they come to you when you call em', don't have to lead them from a tree, turn em' loose from the kennel and they're waiting for you on the tailgate, go to snap them up and they'll sit down til you leash them, take them out and tree 10 squirrels and that night tree 10 coon and the best part is when they're out there sneaking up on coon and putting them up a bush instead of making you walk 3/4 of a mile to look at a den tree. I know there are hounds out there that will do this because I've hunted with some but lets face it the percentage is pretty low. Maybe I'm partial to cur dogs but I want to look at as many coon in a night as possible. I don't want walk to trees without a coon on the outside. A dog must be smart and handle or it's not eatin' my dog food. Just my opinion. Opinions are like @$$holes....everybody has one and nobody wants to hear from em'.

i had curs as a kid and always treed more coon with my silent cur dogs then my hounds,and the best thing about these curs dogs ive seen so far is you hunt coons all night your not hunting the dogs like you do with the hounds

There's been alot of excellent points made on this post, and i agree with most of them, I like curs because they handle well, they are just better all around dogs around the house, they'll ride around in the truck with me etc.....the best thing to do is find some and hunt them and see what ya think

i've got several curs here with hound in them, and i really like that cross, it somewhat eliminates the quirks in the curs and gives some hound traits, i've got an older female here that has thrown some awesome pups, there was a guy in iowa ten years back or so that made a cross three times with exceptional results, wish i could get another like her

i have always wanted to cross a pure sheppard to a inbred cc,the only reason i havent done it is because every good sheppard male was 70 to 90 pounds. and i dont want to feed huge dogs.years ago the sheps were 50 pounds then they bred more for show type and they got huge and more huge. a cop friend of mine has a dutch shepp.he uses at work. brindle short hair, wow what a dog.claude thomas snappy dog was a hell of a squrr dog at 11 months old,notproblem getting your limit with him before he went south,this fall will tell the tail for the cc on squrr. as i will be starting 7 young dogs just on squrr,. not sure what percent i will get for top squrr dogs but i will keep you posted.iam LOL i just started a jack russel and beagle cross on squrr. shes 12 pounds of FIRE track and a jumming up and down good tree dog, i was bored .you know i cant get used to taking one of these midget dogs to the bush.so i gave her to a buddy in new york

your yellow dog is a giant compared to the miget dog i was talking about. yours looks from the tree picture about 25 to 35 lbs,. the one i just trainned is at most 12 pounds. jack and beagle cross but looks pure russel.
