might try a dog food with a higher fat content,meaty table scraps, whole milk and eggs.Thats what I use here at home.Some dogs are just hard to put and keep weight on.

my young dog was a hard gainer; one of the first things i would try is just switch him to a good quality food ; im feeding a grain free feed with no corn.soy or fillers. its not that high in protein or fat 25/14 actually. its just more digestible of a feed . i hunt him 5-6 nights a week and once i switched him to this feed he probably put on 10 lbs of muscle and he looks great


some good feeds are the diamond naturals, black gold ultimate adult, or native.

try this before ya go through the hassle of topdressing his feed with eggs and table scraps .

good quality feed and all the bread it will eat. bread puts weight on very fast even works on people lol

My dog is very hard to keep weight on..not to mention a picky eater. With him i usually feed him one bowl and leave it through the night, take it out in the morning, and run him around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Right now im feeding him Purina One, Lamb and Rice, and he's gaining weight pretty good. My main problem is his picky eating habits. Does your dog eat all of what you give it? I know mine likes to just pick at it and eat not even half :/

we just aquired the hound ive had him about a week he is putting on some weight we feed ultra advantage it seems to be doing well i was just putting this out to see if some one had a idea that i hadnt heard before thanks to all

in the winter i feed deer scraps from the deer processers. now that puts the weight on.

If they are healthy and parasite free, eating daily, and have an opportunity for exercise, I would be hard pressed to find a reason to add wieght to a dog at this time of year.

I feed Diamond Extreme Athlete (32/25) and meat to keep weight on our young guy who rarely stops moving.

He just qualified for the world (2 year old) so no complaints! He can eat whatever he wants that works!

But the high fat/high protein keeps him up nice. If I take him down to lower, he gets ribby right away. He is wormed monthly and praziq for tapes every few months, and flea med monthly. Any parasite can take a dog down some, so definately keep up on the deparasitising!

Dwils~ I agree about the meat-based feeds. They digest most of it, have less poop (and almost no odor) and their coats are awesome.

I had him on Taste of the Wild Prairie, but that still did not keep him up while hunting 4-5 nites a week.

So I ended up trying the Diamond, which is still pretty good with meat, though has the carb fillers to some degree, but that high fat really caught him up nicely.

And he doesnt need tons of feed with that feed, otherwise I have seen him get almost too plump if he has a week off! He reminds me of a racehorse! gotta feed what he is using at that time!

How about posting a picture of the dog in question? You may be trying to top him out to sell to Koreah for all we know. Also, please answer the questions posed to you concerning age, Parasite control regimen, hours hunted loose and hours he actually does something., Other than that, all you are likely to get is folks against corn and Beans riding their little Bandwagon. I , myself would cull a dog that could not do well on Corn and Beans with Vitamins and Micronutrients. Also, I have found that dogs that have had their feed held back don't tend to be so picky. Some dogs are up and back down the pen and work it off. Alot of wasted energy in my book, Pointers tend to do the same thing. Are you feeding a hound or a hybrid? Waylon said"I don't think Hank done it this away" . I know Daniel Boone could not have tolerated it.

he is 4 wormed with ivomec and safegaurd the dog was bought with hips poking out and all ribs showing looks like he hhad his guts slung hunt hunted hunted 5 times in the 7 days i have owned him very high strung healthy eating habits no cough no loss of energy just wanting a little wieght on him so he doesnt look like im starving him have not really had him long enough for my feeding program to really show, it will come off alot quicker than you can put it on . will give drontab this weekend for second round of wormer to oinsure about that

Personally I like satin balls for quick weight... you can google them but it goes something like

10lbs ground beef
10 packets knox gelatin
1 1/2 (maybe? lol) c of both veggie oil & molasses
box of total
box of oatmeal
container of wheat germ
10 raw eggs, with shells

mix it all up, form it into softball-ish size balls, freeze em & feed one a day.

I like the satin balls too, if I need to add a little weight quickly. I feed a high protein/fat feed to all my dogs and have good results. As hot as it's been, even the ones that normally clean their bowls are not eating as much. Like some have mentioned, as long as they're parasite free and have plenty of energy I don't mind my dogs being slimmer during the summer.
