Young Dog Trouble... Need Help

WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I SUPPOSED TO DO ABOUT THIS? I'VE GOT A YOUNG MALE DOG ABOUT 20 MONTHS OLD THAT IS A GREAT COON DOG. HE IS RELUCTANT TO TREE WITH STRANGE DOGS. HE MIGHT COVER THEM BUT IT TAKES HIM A WHILE. THE OTHER NIGHT I WAS IN A HUNT AND HE WAS TREED BY HIMSELF. 2 OTHER DOGS COVERED HIM BEFORE THE 5 WAS UP. THEY TREED FINE TOGETHER. WHILE WALKING IN TO THE TREE WE HEARD ANOTHER DOG JUMP ON HIM AND HEARD HIM YELPING AS HE WAS RUNNING AWAY. GOT TO THE TREE AND OF COURSE THE COON WAS THERE. WHAT, IF ANYTHING CAN I DO TO PREVENT THIS IN THE HUNTS? HE IS A REAL NICE HOUND AND I DON'T REALLY LIKE PUTTING HIM IN THOSE SITUATIONS, BUT IN THE HUNTS YOU DON'T EVER KNOW WHEN YOUR GONNA DRAW A GATOR. I'MJUST KIND OF STUMPED. HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A GRAND NITE WITH EASE IF I CAN JUST GET PAST THIS ONE FLAW. HE ESN'T HAVE AN ILL BONE IN HIS BODY AND I'D LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. AS FAR AS TREEING COONS, HE IS THE BEST I HAVE EVER OWNED, AND THAT'S WHAT IT'S REALLY ALL ABOUT ANY WAY RIGHT?

yep i agree you better keep him out of the hunts you will really screw him up if you keep putting him in the hunts it just takes 1 time to screw a good dog up by hunting them in the hunts jmo

if you have been hunting him for awhile I would say either he has it or not when it comes to handling fang pressure. 20 months or 6 yrs some dogs can hang some can't IMO

I have never been able to under stand why some one would bring a dog to the hunts that is ill anyway, tells me that the owner is dumber than the dog. Sorry to here your pup got jumped on.

I agree with above. I would wait until your dog is a little older and a little more experienced before placing him in nite hunts.

YEAH HE DOES BUT IS SLOW TO BACK ANOTHER DOG. I HUNT HIM STRICTLY BY HIMSELF WHEN NOT IN THE COMP HUNTS. I FEEL LIKE HE CAN LEARN A LOT MORE BY NOT BEING ABLE TO LET THE OTHER DOGS DO THE WORK. HE HAS TREED WITH OTHER DOGS THAT WERE NOT ILL AND HE WAS FINE. HE HAS BEEN JUMPED ON A COUPLE OF TIMES IN THE NIGHT HUNTS. SINCE THE FIRST TIME HE HAS NOT REALLY WANTED TO TREE WITH OTHER DOGS AS MUCH, BUT WHEN HE DOES AND THE DOGS AREN'T ILL, HE IS FINE

seems to me that the problem is't with your dog it's with the people hunting rough dogs. there's not much to be done about that but what they all said, keep him away from the hunts till he is old enough not to let it ruin him. the best coondog I ever hunted with wouldn't stay treed with a rough dog. if people wouldn't hunt mean dogs she would have been hard to beat but if a dog was running her off of trees, it was just time to withdrawl and go home but she still made grnitech pretty easy.

I GUESS IT'S A THING CALLED KARMA. I USED TO HUNT A FEMALE THAT WAS PRETTY TOUCHY. SHE WASN'T MEAN BUT SHE DIDN'T TAKE A WHOLE LOT EITHER. I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE WAY A DOG SHOULD BE, AND I STILL DON'T COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH THAT. BUT SHE GOT ROUGHER THE OLDER SHE GOT AND I KEPT HUNTING HER NOT PAYING IT MUCH ATTENTION UNTIL ONE NIGHT IT WAS TOO LATE AND SHE WAS IN A DOG FIGHT. I GUESS I'M JUST REAPING WHAT I SEWED. IT'S A SHAME FOR ACE THOUGH. HE'S AN ABSOLUTE COON DOG. HE HAS THE BEST ABILITY OF ANY DOG I HAVE OWNED, AND NOW I'M ON THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM AS FAR AS HIS DEMEANOR. I GUESS THAT'S WHAT'S GOT ME STUMPED. I'VE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM OUT OF A DOG. I WAS THE GUY THAT THOUGHT IT WAS OK TO HUNT A SOMEWHAT ROUGH DOG, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT IT TOOK. NOW I SEE WHAT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN LOOKS LIKE. HOPEFULLY IT WILL GET BETTER WITH AGE.

some dogs just have a nice temperment and don't want to fight. I'd rather a dog like that. Ya you might lose some casts because of it but at least you can hold your head high knowing your not hunting an alligator!

sorry to hear about this i had a walker male loudest dog i have ever heard he was really coming on strong we were walking into the tree we were above the hounds caught him red handed growling at the other dog drop kicked him down the hill and a bullet took care of the rest.My point is this NO MATTER HOW WELL HE COULD TREE COONS IN MY OPINION HE WOULD NEVER OF TRULY BEEN A COON DOG ! If everyone would use this method we would not have these issues at night hunts. than if all handlers and judges were honest it would be a pleasure to hunt the nite hunts. Oh well a fella can dream can't he?

SO... IS THIS SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD WORRY ABOUT? HOW LONG DO YA'LL THINK I SHOULD WAIT TO PUT HIM BACK IN THE HUNTS? MY GOAL WAS TO MAKE HIM NITECH BY 24 MONTHS AND I KNOW HE IS CAPABLE. DO YOU THINK HIS DEMEANOR WILL CHANGE AS HE MATURES? SORRY FOR ALL THE QUESTIONS, I JUST WANNA MAKE SURE I DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE DOG.

id run him with other dogs when pleasure hunting here n there...not EVERY time...but once in a while...

they gotta learn to tree with other dogs...for a dog thats never done it, and all the sudden he got dogs coming into his tree, or his track leading to a tree with dogs on it, its something they gotta get used to...

ive found that hunting dogs ALL the time together leads to pack dogs...fine for pleasure hunters or guys that like that...

hunt them with other dogs once in a blue moon seems to make a nice hound..independent hunter that will get it done with or without company..

hunt them alone ALL the time and they end up shy or mean...

just what ive noticed through the years...for my, ive found the best compromise is run them with another dog or 2 every once in a while...sometimes i'll run them together a few nites in a row..sometimes they wont see eachother for weeks or longer..

i dont like running young dogs in hunts because of gators and trash runners and other bad habits..

watched our male dog turn our female into a chewer..

dog getting chewed up at the tree can make that young dog not want to tree ever again...

i dont like to run em in the hunts till they are 2 or 3...thats just me...by then, they either got it or they dont..they will either make it through pretty quickly or they probably shouldnt be there...

I believe in trying to break a rough dog but if you can't break them, don't just say oh well and take them to the hunts anyway. that's a lot of the problem. if somebody likes a dog and they can't break them of being rough, they just say oh well and take them anyway!!!

We had a red pup that acted rough the first time we shot him a coon. we whooped his ass right then and there, the first time it happened, and we have not had another problem since. Some people just let them do it!!!

YOU CAN'T FIX MEAN... U MIGHT LIGHT BREAK THEM, BUT IF IT'S IN THE DOG THEN THAT'S JUST WHAT IT IS. KEEP AN EYE ON THE PUP.

TOOK HIM WITH STRANGE DOGS LAST NIGHT AND THE NIGHT BEFORE. TREED BY HIS SELF LAST NIGHT AND BOTH DOGS HAD DENS. THEN TREED 2 BY HIS SELF AFTER THE OTHER FELLA WENT HOME. TREED 4 COONS BY HIS SELF THE NIGHT BEFORE LAST AND THE SYRANGE DOG COVERED HIM. HE STAYED. THE STRANGE DOG TREED AHEAD OF HIM ON A TRACK THAT ACE STRUCK AND WOULDN'T TREE WITH HER. SHE HAD 2 COONS. HE WENT 75 YARDS AND TREED IN A DEN. NEVER OPENED BETWEEN TREES. SHOT A COON OUT TO THE FEMALE WHILE HE WAS TIED BACK AND DIDN'T LET HIM GET NONE OF IT. NEXT DROP HE LEFT THE COUNTRY AND GOT TREED QUICK, HAD A COON, BUT AGAIN HE WAS BY HIS SELF.
