gps tracking units

Has anyone other than garmin came out with a gps unit yet??

I know a while back one of the makers was supposed to have one released that blew the doors off garmin....

Just doing my homework and research before I buy...and want the best system available...or will wait if y'all know there's a new one on its way...

Info, thoughts, anything is appreciated...like I said, its time to do homework before I jump in and buy one...

Thanx

I think if and when something comes along that will blow the doors off a Garmin or even run along beside it, the whole coonhunting world will know about it and no one will be asking if it is out there.
But to answer your question......no, nothing yet.

Thanx Jim...kinda figured that...but haven't kept up online lately...and other than the last 2 weeks I haven't been to a nite hunt in almost a year so thought maybe I missed something....

I want a GPS to track myself while hunting in some big woods...

And might get a pup of my own this summer...so I might buy one...

Can't remember what I read...or where I read it...I think it was gps/radio or gps/cell phone signal or something that backed the gps up....

You'd figure backing the gps with radio would be easy enough....and would give guys on the fence like me peace of mind....

2 things I still worry about....range...my radio I can climb or drive to the top of a hill and get a direction...no matter how many hills and hollows away she got....and battery life...17-36hrs ain't much...36 is fine id say...20..no way...get real lost somehow and you might not find the dog coz the battery died...

this has gps and radio tracking in one and is supposed to have much better range than the garmin, but you would think that if they were that great more coonhunters would be on top of it. $250 for collar and $499 for receiver.

thanx lildry and ahinsch

atleast someone came out with radio/gps...now to perfect it...

i know i know...put both collars on the dog and keep the radio system...

thats silly IMO..i trust my radio system and never had trouble with it...id run both till i was comfortable with GPS..but wouldnt want both all the time...

im guessing the hardest part would be a receiver to pick up both signals..and not make it ginormous or have to have 2.....and i dont think radio picks up as good without a big antenna..

still kickin the thought around and doing some research...seems most everyone that uses them loves them...and ive talked to everyone at the hunts that i see running it and they all say they absolutely love it and cant believe they made it through life without one lol...ive had some 40-60yr old guys say that which kinda shocked me lol...here i am in my 20s and i havent made the switch lol...

found a review of the tinyloc...seems the guy was happy with it other than the fact that the only way to use maps was to connect to a computer...

so, in the end, the GPS feature is just a direction much like a radio direction...

range was good..wasnt as good as advertised for that guy...but, was better than garmins even advertised 7mi gps range...

now for someone to get both the GPS with screen and map and also radio into one receiver...

2 dogs blew outta hearing saturday nite at a hunt..never barked within hearing...hunt was over...they fired up the GPS and seen the hillside was a monster...easiest way by following a radio signal would been up and down 3 monster hills...easiest way to them for us walking was back to the truck on the top of the hill and follow a ridge around...and the GPS even told us that they were on the edge of the hill and we knew we wouldnt have to go down the vertical hill to get to them...

that was pretty nice...thats what really made me want one..im good with GPS and topos..so it would save me some hill climbing...
