It might be a good idea not to hunt in the snow. If you do it might not be a good idea to hunt alone. Don't turn loose on a good size river surrounded by steep hills covered with ivys. When you walk into your dogs and you have to walk out a rock ledge covered with ice, don't hold on to an ivy limb because it might break and you could fall, almost breaking your leg. When you shoot the coon out, and it lands on the edge of the river, don't slip on the bank of the river because the only thing that may keep you from going in might be a big rock. If you should happen to slip and hit the rock it hurts real bad. Don't be in a hurry pulling two dogs up the hillside covered with snow because it will take a while; especially when you take one step forward and slide three feet back.

I know why these things are not good. Just got in. I feel like I've been run over by a truck.........ever how that feels!!!

Good advice! We just got socked with snow. I've been debating going out anyway because it's warmer then it's been in weeks. Maybe I'll be real careful selecting my hunting spot. Cabin fever!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you mean don't hunt in the snow???? That is some of my favorite hunting! Besides that would mean no hunting for about 3-4 months.

There is a lot of rough country down here.... Iv had to go to my dogs before. And man some of the steepest places iv ever seen. Iv been places where a goat wouldn't go. Iv climbed mountains that was so steep, to sit down all you had to do was turn around and lean back. And you would be laying flat.... That really sucks

Hunted a major river bottom here in southern michigan on Jan. 30 and boy was that a mistake. Didn't even think about there being ice on the log-jams. Ran one across the river and the dog was able to easily cross the river because of the ice on the log jams. It was much more difficult for my hunting buddy and I to get across there. Turned out that when he tried to get on the other side of one of the icy logs with his slippery, nylon bibs on he rolled right into that cold water. Got soaked from his neck down. All of this for a den tree on the other side. Worst part for him was the dog struck on the leash walking out and he was foolish enough to cut him loose again.

Never experienced the sheer cliffs and ivy of the south but that was one of the biggest mistakes I have made in a while. I definitely won't be hunting river bottoms anytime soon.

When I saw that big coon in the tree, I forgot about all of the scratches I recieved getting to the dogs. I forgot about my bleeding leg. I forgot about all of the bad, and was proud of my dogs because they had done their job in rough conditions. I even forgot about almost falling into the river.

However, I remembered it all this morning!!!!!!

You don't have to be crazy to do this, but it helps!!!

Hope your alright Craig, that sounds like the makings for a bad night. Glad the dogs at least had the coon, that always makes for a little better night. Hope you got some tylenol sounds like you might need some.

A few years ago I would have thought nothing of a deal like you had.

Dogs got treed around 300 yds into some pits last night. Pits are locations where coal has been removed with lots of ups and downs, dense brush, briars, honey suckel, deep water and lots of coon. When there frozen over it's better. I was just afraid to walk on the ice much. They may be thin ice in places where the beavers have worked. One can get into a bad situation but we need to avoid those deals the older we get.

Aww come on. I'm an osteoporotic old lady with bad knees and hunt alone in the Catskills all winter. Its true I'm better equipped--dressed warm, carry a small axe, keep a complete change of clothes in the truck. I keep some ice grips for the bottom of my boots in the front door of my truck, and bring snow shoes if that's going to be an issue. My only big concern is dogs falling through thin ice. One of mine does it regularly. He's a good swimmer and manages to break up the ice while he swims, but they do get pulled under by swift currents. I do end up black and blue a lot, but I do that in the summertime too.

Frozen ground and rocks do hurt. I've hunted in the Georgia mountains. Being a Iowa boy some of it seemed like a rain forest to me. Plants with 2 foot leaves hitting me as I slid into a creek on the rocks. I still have a scope that's banged up from sliding down a hill into a rock creek in Georgia face first.
