Question from a new guy..

I am really "bumfoozled" I just bought a started Redtick coonhound(19 mo.) for 1000.00 bucks from one of the icons of the English world. I sent her to an experienced dogman who has been trying to get her started on fox, lion, bear. He said she runs tracks backwords. Even when the other dogs are opened up on a fox and get it treed, she is busy backtracking it, all the way to the house. She won't hunt with the other dogs, she go'es off and "do's her own thing."Can anyone tell me what's go'in on?

Rob

Ron, I was raised up hunting English dogs. I have hunted with one of the most well known English men alive...he now owns 99% walkers.

My dad and I have tried out several English dogs in the last year....All but one was culled. All they wanted to do was fight and stand under our feet. of the 5 we hunted 3 wouldn't even give a second of attention to a dead coon.

And these were well bred, dogs out of the Rage, dog, A well known Main street stud etc.

My comment was made in fun...NOTICE THE SMILEY FACE... But some folks seem to take things a little too hard.

Smile...Life is short, dogs aren't perfect and walkers still kick butt in the hunts.

backtracking

Age, amount hunted will make a difference. I know of nothing you can do but keep hunting. In the future hunt a dog more than once before buying. I don't know anything about fox except they are very smart. You could try to ride around and turn out on some seen crossing the road if you have enough preferred game in your area. Good luck. The walkers guys need to realize that English win in the big hunts too.

I don't understand, I guess is why buy a $1000 started "coon dog" and try to run fox, Maybe he/she is a broke dog & just running away from the trouble, lol, not really, If you want to hunt fox, there are breeds bred for that, or just take a pup & start them on fox, skipping the coon part,

Hey...Where did I "whine"?? Why is it walker guys can take jokes ab out their breed and get on with life and the other folks get all defensive and hateful??

No doubt, there is different breeds than walkers. I have hunted them all over the years....I spent the first 20 years of my life hunting English and Blueticks and I keep coming back to the Walkers because I don't have to go thru 10 different young dogs to find one that has enough natural ability to hunt and tree on it's own.

Show me a English dog like we had back in the early 80's that have the big hound look to them, big mouths and want to do more than fight and I will be more than glad to hunt it. I know they exist...but how many more do we have to go thru until we find one??
So far we are 0-4 and some major money in the hole. I couldn't even give the last one away and he was out of a bench show champion whose sire has been advertised and hyped up for months on this very forum and the magazines. Look up my posts trying to practically give him away as a bench dog because he wouldn't even try to hunt..and he ha over 90 days of hard hunting time in the upper midwest.

She must have had a bad day, because she is doing good now, was first dog to the tree and snatched the fox as soon as he hit the ground. Bring on the lion and bear....and, thanks to those who offered constructive advice. Mike

things must be different in your neck of the woods because the fox around here usually run into a den not climb a tree.... different strokes for different folks I guess!!!

Walkers

You walker guys are all the same. Everyone knows they are out there. The walker was the #1 dog registered with UKC out of any other breed. So, naturally you will see more that are better than any other breed. But, on the same token you will see more that are crap than any other breed. The guys with the top walker dogs don't get on her talkin crap about every other breed. Its you guys with the mediocre walkers that get on here and breed bash. Just how I see it.

Your math isnt 100% correct.

There is no way of knowing the percentage of registered walkers that actually "make a coondog". Even when you compare the number of registered walkers, to those who place in the hunts, walkers win hands down. It isn't because there is more of them, it is because a higher percentage if them end up making a dog that can run and tree than the rival breeds.

I have started 6 walker pups in the last 2 years and all have made nice dogs. Two were sold for pretty nice money at less than 18 months of age. All were running and treeing before they were 10 months old.

I have also started 4 English and a bluetick and all weren't fit to kill and of the 5 , only one would/could run a track at one year of age.

You can scream "numbers" all you want...but I see a greater PERCENTAGE of walkers that have NATURAL ABILITY than any other breed....and I have hunted them all.

My Rage/Kate puppy is treeing with the big dogs and has never stood under my feet he fights harder to go hunting than my bluetick he jumped on a boar coon saturday night in waist deep water and took all that coon gave him im very happy with my Rage pup.. My blue dog ran track backwards for a month or so he figured out pretty quickly without me doing a thing maybe he just grew up idk everyone told me to bump him when he went backwards I just assumed he would figure it out and he did....now if he gets on a old/cold track he will come back to where he started and run it again till he figures it out but I don't mind that

numbers

I was going off of numbers year before last. UKC reported more walkers reg than any other breed. I don't want to start a breed war. I like em all if they can start a coon and finish it and have it. I like the blues and am tough on em. If they don't make the cut it will be culled. I know people have been working on em a long time but if one don't make it I will not keep it or breed to it. I think if all the breeds will cull super hard we will all be proud. I though am proud of what I hunt. I have a 6 1/2 mo male and a 7 1/2 mo female that are going with the big dogs and starting to open and tree. They are coming on strong but if they don't make I won't let them stay. All crosses don't make it but if you start with a solid foundation it is more likely to end with good results. JMO all may not agree.
