any body ever have a dog that trees treerats at night ? Just got a dog and I think thats what he's doing. took him out in the daytime and he treed two. I caught two in live trap and we're working things out {ouch on his part}. coon are thin right now as cold as it is so he's not getting as much positive reinforcement as I'd like. Any suggestions

absolutely. some people dont relize either that a high majority of the time dogs tree slick, they are actually treeing squirrels. very common.

But some very ignorant people cull or trade off dogs alot of the time and say the dog has too much tree or is a slick treeing idiot.

i will tell you right now my Grnite Banjo dog was BAD when young at squirrels. when you walk to 12 trees and look at squirrels nests and shagbark hickory trees its just a no brainer what the dog is doing. all it took was a few beatings and HARD hunting and a little age.

one thing to always keep into consideration is NEVER make excuses and NEVER give the dog the benefit of the doubt .

well i'm what you would call and advid squirrel hunter. i also hunt coons after dark. i simply wait until a little while after dark and go. i don't have any problems at all and i use my dogs for squirrels and coons. i've shoot many squirrels to all my dogs. we have few coons here too. i don't see them at all an hour after dark even on a full moon. i'm sure though that there are exceptions.

do you guys have flying squirrels they are out at night way more than in the day . this little dog does a nice job when he's on and I let him know when he don't but I've never see one with this much intencity. If and when I get him straighted out he is goig to be something speciel

Why ruin a perfectly good squirrel dog? Just trade him for a coon dog, I know lots of guys who would love to have him. Your just looking at it the wrong way.

Ive treed squirrels at night but if you look around theres usually a squirrels nest with a coon in it.I think the coon bumps the squirrels out of there nests.

funny you say walker boys. last cast i was in a bluetick "COLD" trailed and slammed a squirrel. on the outside. squirrel seen

...............if that would have been a coon that would have been the best job i ever seen by a blue dog.

buddy im not ignorant, and i dont think treeing squirrels is much of an excuse for treeing slick. but im teling ya, many dogs people call slick treeing idiots are treeing squirrels

if you shined the tree 4 how ever long no time limit
on pleasure hunting looking for a varmit and you dont
find 1 its slick....oh i dont see them other kc running
blue dogs bring in circles

Some of you guys are really dumb. Dogs that tree slick alot, especially early at night, are often treeing squirrels. A quick solution is take them out in a squirrel woods in the daytime and light them up if they open, it is almost always a squirrel. Then, take them out at night and drop a coon to them. If they don't figure out the difference in a couple of treatments, they ain't going to make a top coon dog anyway.

Flying squirrel do run at night and some dogs will tree them. When a dog trees like he saw one go up on a 4" tree and it is slick, it was likely a flying squirrel.

I have started over 100 dogs on squirrels. The key is the nose. If they are out of hot nosed stock, it can be a good thing. Never start cold nosed stock on squirrels, they will still be treeing them at midnight. And, some squirrels run in the moonlight.

Coon often run squirrels out of nests at night. I have seen them run squirrels out of dens but not often.

I am a fellow who has owned Grand Squirrel Champions and Grand Nite Champions.

oh bologna where does the fly squirrel go.
i have squalled plenty of coons that young dogs
couldnt smell wants they get to moving

I guess I've lived a sheltered life! I'm only 55yrs old, but I have to tell all you guys that claim to see all these squirrels at night! "what woods do you hunt"? In 55 yrs I would think that surely I would have noticed a squirrel if they moved that much! The only squirrel I ever saw was when my dog treed & I saw a squirrel on the limb close to a nest, shot the nest & the coon rolled out! That is one in 40+yrs of hunting! Sheltered life I guess LOL! If you say you haven't seen a squirrel at night, that's OK with me. It is not something that happens all the time but over the 50 years I have hunted, I have seen squirrels at night. Usually, it is when a coon runs one out of a nest. On some bright moonlit nights, I have seen grey squirrels running. It is a fact that flying squirrels run at night. Around here, there is not a lot of them and you will very rarely see one. They den in old, rotten trees that are still standing. If you haven't had a dog tree red hot on a 4" tree with nothing up the tree when you get there, you have lived a sheltered life. LOL.

Well I have treed squirrels at night and even watched them cutting hickory nuts on a moonlight night

and a whole of dogs that tree sick at night are treeing squirrels early usally less of a problem later a night but than you do have them suped up idiots who just want to tree and yes you do see more walker dogs like this than other breeds but than its more of them out there too
and some strains are worse than others

I was spectating on a Nt.Ch cast 1 night a few years back. I watched as a cast walk into a top bluetick and walker dawg treed. I was maybe 20 yards behind them. I watched a flying squirrel guide out of the tree at one of the hunters light's edge.

No one else seen it.

I also seen a dog tree a whole tree of flying squirrels on another night. My buddy grabbed a vine and gave it a shake. There had to be at least 4-5 flying squireels as they glided out in all directions. My buddy did not appreciate my humor when at the next drop I made the comment, " well we treed Rocky on the last drop what is next bullwinkle?"

Yes, flying squirrels make a lot of dogs look bad. I had a female that would only tree a squirrel on a cold moonlite night when coons weren't moving. As I said before snow does not lie.

we gave him a little education and so far so good I've been at this for 40 yrs and it really is the first time I've had a dog tree squirrels or trees like he does .But right now I think we're on our way of getting things straight

I always enjoy these heated posts! I also enjoy reading other hunters thoughts and accounts of what they feel their dogs are doing. I listen to things that make sense and forget what doesn't. We can always learn from others, pretty obvious no one person has this "dog thing" down yet!!

i had a old black tan gyp that would tree squrriell in day time but never seem to fool with them at night the old man i got her from squrriel hunted her and told me she wouldnt bother them at night when she treed at night there was a coon in it or a den

i aint to smarti have coonhunted from the time i was a little kid with my grand pap when he passed i was 10 yrs old i going on 61now i aint never seen a dog that is a coonhound tree no squrreil at night not saying some wont but they are bred to run and tree coon if one trees squrreills i would say he is tree happy jmo
