Tuff is owned by James "Shack" Mccollugh and Zach Moon of Mighty God Kennels in Hayti MO.
John Gossett was Tuff's breeder and started him as a pup. He can fill you in on Tuff's littermates. I believe the only living littermate is John Long's Luna female that has reproduced some nice money winners in PKC.
I hunted with him 1 night in late January of 2008. The night we were down there it was terrible cold, at least for them boys. It felt like a heat wave to us.
What I seen that night was that Tuff operated similar to his sire Wild Casey. He paid no attention to the other dogs that were out there and got treed by himself. Anything could cover him, not an ill hair on him. He has a good bawl mouth and opens on the ground just right. He never barked in the same spot twice and put a good bit of distance in between barks.
Pine Ridge Tuff
Independent. He took pressure when 3 other young dogs were cut ahead of him and were struck and treeing, Tuff went the other way. He took pressure when the other dog that was cut with him pulled up treed slick and Tuff went right on by and finished the track. He took pressure when my pen stale bitch run some junk, he finished what he had started and treed.
Tuff has a good carrying mouth. Nearly every tree he made he was 3x the distance I thought he was. His tree mouth carries very well, my Ox dog off him is the same way. Loud isn't the first impression you'll get but you'll realize how well it carries after you've walked to a couple trees.
Not a blow down tree dog. Typical Clover. Trees with a chop mouth just hard enough to get you there. 4 feet on the ground at the base of the tree.
The night I hunted with him we cut him loose 3 times in the freezing cold and he put an honest end to every track he struck. We looked at 3 den trees but I saw enough for what I was looking for.
Pine Ridge Tuff
Tuff also has an excellent disposition from the little I was around him. I seen young dogs come in and cover late and climb all over, he paid them no attention. He seemed like a smart enough hound that you could probably hunt without ever putting a lead on him. We bred a female to him that night in the hotel parking lot and then went over again the next day. All the dogs in the yard were barking and carrying on, while Tuff laid around and never barked. I fell in love with Pine Ridge Tuff for the few hours I was around him.
As far as reproducing, I'm not sure. It sure seems like he bred some quality females in 2008 and I expected to see more young dogs showing up in the winner's circle. I know them boys hunt more PKC than anything and I don't follow PKC that close, so it is possible they are doing some winning that I'm not aware of.
I have a not yet 4 year old male here out of Pine Ridge Tuff and Stylish Chase. He suits me as well as anything I've ever hunted. My description of Tuff is very similar to how I would describe Ox. He looks outstanding in poor weather. Nice independent hound with a great disposition. He made Nite Ch in UKC & AKC in just a few short months after being entered in his first hunt.
Pine Ridge Wild Ox
We bred Dad's Maggie female to Tuff after doing a lot of research. I really believed that cross would be dynamite but it was mediocre at best. 2 males in the cross were bought and sold a couple of times and became trade dogs before being 14 months old. Not sure what came of either of them. One female was running and treeing as a baby pup but as it matured it showed some disposition faults and was culled. Many folks would not have culled her for it because she was coming along decent in the woods, but I was glad the man culled her. Another female in Missisippi was lighting the world on fire at 7 months old and the boy told me he turned down $2500 for her at 6 months old. He then fell off the face of the earth and I never heard from him again.
We kept one from the litter and she was a nice independent tree dog that was good about having a coon but beyond that we didn't like her style. She was a rogue hunter and it seemed she'd hunt and get treed the last place you'd expect her to every time we cut her loose. I hated her in the kennel. High strung, chewed up everything. She didn't say much on the ground but when she did is was a big booming bawl mouth. He locate sounds like a lion roaring. She rolled it over to a good chop mouth on tree like her mother. We sold her to a man in Florida who is tickled to death with her. I believe his boy put a 1st place win on her recently at the Florida State Youth event by treeing 2 coons off by herself. If she was the only thing I had to hunt, we'd have kept her but we had too many and didn't like her as much as the others.
One Tuff Cookie
Dad's Maggie hasn't been a great reproducer so I can't fault Tuff for that litter. I had extremely high hopes and it didn't work that well.
I know of 2-3 other folks in my area hunting young dogs off Pine Ridge Tuff and different females that are very happy with what they are, so I do believe Tuff is putting some nice dogs on the ground.
Of the 2 Tuff pups I've owned they had a few things in common, they go hunting, they don't say a lot on the ground, big bawl locates, naturally independent, stay put tree dogs.
