Garmin updates

Recently lost garmin astro 220 and purchased 2 (one for me and my dad) one will only track about 90 yards in wide open field and the other does a little better with range of about 400-600 in the mountains. My old unit would go about 600- 800 yards. I was just wondering if ya’ll thought updates would help out. Also is there an update for the dc 30 collars too?

Go to SYSTEM, then hit MENU and you should see an option to click on for "VERSION" if I am not mistaken...

No cable needed you have to have the Collar on and near the handheld unit. It will do the upgrade through the handheld to the collar. Will tell you when it is done. Another thing that might help. I always calibrate my unit when I change the batteries or do updates.

update the collars

Have the usb plugged into handheld unit and the collar on. Press Dog button, select the collar you want to upgrade by pressing enter. This will take you to the dog info page, press menu. At the bottom it will say upgrade dog unit, select that and follow the on screen instructions. Hope this helps. (Make sure your batteries are charged, you dont want them going dead when you are in the middle of an update)

The updates are not gonna solve your problem. With the limited range you are getting, there is definately a much bigger problem. If you have just one collar and are getting these limited reception distances with both handhelds, then I would be checking the antenna on that collar. But you got a bigger problem that updates won't solve.

That isn't what Garmin techs say. Had a friend that only got 60 yards then lost reception. He called Garmin and they told him that if he is not updated to the current version you can have a software glitch that will effect range among other things. I also thought it was an antenna issue, but it turned out to be an update issue

Ok... this might be a stupid question but I'm new to the whole Garmin thing..

I hooked up my Garmin, got on Garmin website.. Blah blah blah..
It told me I did not need to update.. But.. Does that mean my collars don't need updated? I didn't even try my collars.. Just said "ok" and left it at that.. Or should I go ahead and try to update my collars..

I have one collar that will not keep updating (when using).. It updates a couple times, then quits.. My other two collars are updating fine.. Went out the other day and it showed the one collar a mile away from the other two treed dogs.. and she was there the whole time..
