First coon hound!

hey guys this is my first coon hound.. have had a few beagles and trained them from pups and have also been coon hunting with buddies for about 10 years now.. figured it was time to figure the game out for myself and get my own hound.. i bought a english retick and hes gonna be 7 weeks this thursday.. my question is, is there a too early to start a pup? i already figured i wouldnt show it a live coon until ATLEAST 6 months.. but for drags and hides i dont know when to start.. i have recently read "Walk with Wick" by John Wick who happens to be a friend of mines uncle.. any suggestions will help guys! thanks!

if John Wick is a friend of your uncles, id do everything i could to go over and meet him and talk to him!

good luck with the new pup!! i cant help much..i dont mess with hides or drags or scents or anything like that...i let them be puppies and teach them manners, obedience, walking on a leash etc while they are young...but mostly let them be puppies..play with them and keep them active...take them out and let them walk in the woods and sniff around and learn the ways of the woods etc...

I dont think there is an age to young to start working a pup. just dont want to push a puppy to hard. drags are fine for pups, I have a hide in the welping box before they even have their eye's open seems to start pups earlier and generly dont have trash problems. hope this helps and good luck with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!

get a tail or a hyde and PLAY drag it a little in front of the pup so that they learn that it runs away, dont bother w/ trying to get it to tree and bark or anything, just teach it that the smell is fun.

thanks guys!!.. This little bugger is a maniac already.. got him a little stuffed squeaker coon and he goes nuts with it.. Mr. Wick claims if you start too soon you can ruin the pup, that they will get completely bored with the idea of anything having to deal with a coon.. i take him for ATLEAST 3 walks a day in the woods and he loves it..

walks are never a bad idea, keep your "play sessions" short so that it's enjoyable to the pup cuz if it starts to be like work then the pup wont like it, and only do like 5 min coon play sessions right now cuz they have a short attention span

If you enjoy a dog as a hunter but also as a buddy it won't hurt their hunting unless you are an inconsistent trainer. Lots of hunting dogs are family dogs also but if you get real attached and this hound runs out and gets shot or run over you will maybe do it different in the future. I think folks tend to enjoy labs and bird dogs more for both hunting and family dogs because they hunt closer so they may last longer instead of a dog that is out a mile or more on a track. It's really what you want to do and are willing to take if a hunt goes bad.

both the hounds i run are house dogs and always have been house dogs...they are talked to, petted, and somewhat babied like a house dog..

they are both smarter than your average dog and i believe that is why....they are very mannerly..listen great..come when called...

called the male off a tree one nite...he was across a creek and no way to cross but swim or walk a couple miles...we called him off and he came to us...

they both know right from wrong just by my actions or how my voice is...they know if they slick tree and i pull them off the leash and say bad they did bad..

id agree with Mr. Wick...i like to think of it as kids and sports...i knew A LOT of kids in school sports when i was in school that HATED it by the time highschool came...many could or did get scholarships to colleges...none ever lasted..their parents pushed them from a young age and as they got older they hated it...even though they were crazy about it as kids...i think of dogs the same way...might start working with them at 6-8 months..but nothing serious and nothing to get mad over..depending on the weather depends when i'll start them seriously...im not gunna bother messing with a dog in October just because its 6 months old..i'll wait till spring when the weather breaks and i can keep on him for a long while and not lay him up...

good training and being taken to the woods makes a coon dog...they gotta have the instinct and natural ability...but need trained right and hunted...

a more mature dog will also handle differently than a pup...you can ruin a pup in a hurry by poor handling....example..the female i run was about ruined because when she was young, my buddy started her and got her running good..treeing her own coon and straight...his GFs son took her to the woods..its really his dog...but he was afraid of the dark..afraid of getting lost..afraid of loosing the dog..idk...but after 10-15mins he'd call her off the track she was running...

that about ruined her...shes still not what she should be..she looked better at 2 before he took her hunting than she does now at 5..

i wouldnt do that to ANY dog on a regular basis..but like to know i can if i absolutely have to..danger, emergency comes up, no way to get to the tree etc...but wont do it to a young dog unless theres no other option...

exactly, my pups get worked (or played with) coon tails and they are ALMOST 6 months right now, i'm gunna start laying SHORT drags for them, just 2 or 3 times a week but i wont let them tree long cuz they'll get bored to easily, they also have free range on the farm cats.

most of all DONT OVER WORK THE PUP!! if he starts getting easily distracted, STOP.

i show mine coon tails and let them play with them as soon as they can walk out in the yard. but don't let them get bored with them. i find if you put it on a tree (just 2 feet up), they usually go looking for something else, so i drop it back in front of them immediately - play with them like this for just a few miniutes, then pet them and move on.

as they get older, they progressively find more and longer interest in the tails, drags, etc. I may SHOW them a caged coon real young (couple months ), but don't let them get close enough to get bit or scared of it. When I see a little fight in them (4-6 months), that is a good time to let them get excited over a caged one. but, then I haven't trained a whole lot of pups and am no expert so......

but I do listen and learn from the experts. that's the best thing any coon hunter / trainer can learn himself. no matter who we are or how much an expert you are....never stop learning yourself

I guess i lucked out, got mine at almost 4 months of age. didnt know what to show him or what to do. just BONDED with him. got all the wick books , read all i could, and just took him to the woods WITHOUT a shock collar and spent alot of time working with him, and him with me, til the big snow hit. still took him out when "I"needed it. anyways, he is still my best bud, can sound off like no tomorrow. i can call him off anything, yet to prove "anything", but i can call him off and back at 1 yr. old ( according to a garmin at 400 yards and running with another dog). and he works for/with me. being an inside dog is no different, but i do think that the coat development makes a difference when you put them back in the box after a good runnin in the rain and 40 degree weather.
now, back to the topic. never make training boring. ever, no matter what the age. bond, bond , bond. i would show him one , fresh hide or tail, see where it goes and then back off if he shows no interest. there are too many smells and too much that the pup is going to be interested in. it is big new world to him.
take it like a houndsmen that you said you are ( beagles), you already know how to do this, no matter what the breed or what you hunt.
