How Old Should A Dog Be Before You Put It In A Nite Hunt?

I ask this because I have a 13 month old pup that is starting to do a very impressive job treeing coon by himself. He is VERY ACCURATE too! I would like to start hunting in some nite hunts but I dont want to push him in there too early. I dont want him to get eat up by another dog or start becoming a (mee too) dog just cause another dog is treeing or pick up any other bad habbits. So how old do you usually let em get before you start pushin em in the hunts? Thanks, WES

You aren't going to hurt him buy putting him in one unless you get him eat off a tree or something. The main thing is if you get out with a mean dog just withdraw him. You don't have to just start putting them in every hunt becouse you put them in the first one. No body can tell you if your dog is ready from what you type on here. Another test is to put it in a hunt with some buddies.
One more thing. If he does something he isn't supose to and you want to correct him just withdraw him. Scoled him and leave him at the truck next dump. It is a $ 15.00 -$20.00 lesson.

Always good to hear of young dogs doing well. There are people who run trashy dogs, mean dogs, slick tree'ers and ones that actually can not tree a coon. When you're confident your dog has enough of a mind of it's own that it won't pick up bad habits is when they're probably ready. Also, just because you withdraw your dog does not mean you can correct it, you can still get written up.

Tjat is true about correcting your dog but I have never seen any problem with Scoleding a dog once it has been withdrawn. It will atleast let it know you are not happy with it's actions. Then you can take it on a buddy hunt and fix the problem or what ever it takes. Point is there are NITECH's younger than yours. So there is no right age. Depends on the dog and you won't know till you put it in the woods with strange misbehaved dogs.

The biggest downside to putting a pup in the hunts is that you cannot correct them when they screw up if you are in a hunt. Yes, you can withdraw and correct your dog but that is a fairly lowdown way to treat your fellow competitors and withdrawing doe not relieve you from abiding by rule 6(m). So if you enter your pup in a UKC hunt, you accept the fact that the dog will get away with every wrong thing it does because that dog doesn't know anything about plus or minus points. So you have to decide if you can live with your pup covering late, leaving trees to go cover another dog, trashing, slick treeing, etc without recieving any kind of correction.

How old

My rule of thumb is if you have to ask this question, the dog is not ready.

Around here the guys that I draw at hunts are guys that I pleasure hunt with fairly regular with. When I want to see if a dog is ready I go pleasure hunt with them where if the pup/dog screws up I can still adjust or correct it.

IMO a dog entered in a competition event should be able to run and tree its own coon and be mentally mature enough to handle anything it might encounter.

That seems like common sense but it is amazing how many dogs get entered because the handler doesn't have anywhere to hunt on they're own so they enter nite hunts to go coonhunting or the enter nite hunts to run they're young dog with other dogs for training and evaluation purposes.

Jim had a pup in the world hunt that was how old 13 mo?

Bill Herrell Had a plott female that was 14 mo old in the top 100 of the world.

Trust your instinct, you will know when the time is right, like what was said if you are questioning it, the dog is to young.

Well there is two for the hunt. That is enough for a cast. Hope you live close together though. Guess yawl will have to split the cost of the club house and all. LOL

What do you mean you can't correct them? If my young dog was to reach over and start a fight he would be scratched and beat all the way back to the truck.

I made my female a nitech at ten months and grand at 19. If you see hunts affecting them or teaching them bad habits pull them out for awhile. Some dogs mature faster than others and do what there supposed to no matter what the others in the cast do. If you dog is level headed and not prone to do whatever everyone else is doing I would go for it.

If you are CERTAIN your dog can tree a coon on his own and hold a significant amount of pressure without moving, then he's ready.

When my GrandNite was 12-13 months old I started her in the hunts. Hardly anyone thought she was ready besides me. However, I was the one hunting her and seeing her work every night. Heck even a few FELLOW club members from my club said my dog couldn't even tree a coon... until she beat his dog at a nite hunt by splitting with a coon 3 times (one within 50ft) and holding pressure all night at 12 months old.

Needless to say, he didn't have much to say after the hunt when I asked him if my dog could tree a coon.

Moral of the story is that YOU are the only one that KNOWS if your dog can get it done and it's your decision.
