ot- Jeep troubles

My daughter has a '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a inline 6 cyl. It got to where it would stall out when accelerating. I took it to a "jeep" mechanic and was told the ecm was going bad. I replaced it and it ran fine for several weeks , then started failing to start. It just quits firing. I can put pressure on the center plug on the ecm and make it start or cut it off. I put dielectric grease in the plugs, no better. It will start sometimes and sometimes not. I took the plug apart and found no problem. Every thing I have tested checks good. It shows no codes that should affect it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm a Cat mchanic and am almost lost on cars now days.

A coworker of mine had this problem witha chevy truck. It took 3 auto mechanics and about 6 months to fix. I seem to remember it was one wire to ecm that had bad spot, it tested good everytime but was bad. I will ask him tommorow what it was for sure.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

1deadeye, I looked up the thread you posted and it sure sounded like this jeep. I removed the screws (they were 1/2 in long) and put washers under them. The engine started right up and it did not cut off when I put pressure on the ECM plugs like it had been doing. I will pray that this has fixed the problem. I'll also not rest easy until it runs awhile with out the problem coming back though.

try the fuel module. should be twoards the tank, the computers will read funky and say that one bank isnt firing, and then talk you into a fuel pump. if not, try map sensor. for sure.

Glad to hear Bill. Maybe when you grabbed the wire loom and wiggled it, it made it ground out. The Grands are known for a lot of electrical issues. Mostly with the anti-theft system.
Hope it fixed your problem.

1nighthunter, I have had 3 Jeep Grand Cherokees. They all had 250,000-300,000 mi on them when I sold them and I had no problems.

I've seen this before. You might have a crack where the exhaust attaches to the manifold. It's not uncommon and is a typical problem with that model of Jeep. It's almost virtually impossible to see without pulling the motor. If it is cracked and you can get to it.? JB WELD will seal it or the doughy metal composite will work. The metal composite hardens after being exposed to air. You can buy either one at a auto parts store. I hope I've helped. Good luck!
