coons tapping trees

i have a young pup, he is only 7 months old. i believe that he has been treeing on tapped trees. he is doing great. sometimes thou he will fall within 50 yards of the coon. ive been hunting him on feeders so most of his coons are hot. he is becoming independent and seems to want to spilt tree. ive havent ran into to this problem before. ive always hunted with my old hound and she has never ran into this problem. he will tree with other dogs sometimes, but just trees harder by himself. what should i do to try to correct this? is it that he is just young and too excited? im not 100% positive these are tapped but my old hound will bark at the tree, but she wont tree on them, so im guess that it is tapped. thanks for the advise!

Hunt him alone in a place you don't mind killing coons. whoop him when he's slick and send him on. shoot out the coon when he's right. one week every nite will make a world of difference.

I had one that did that when she was young, I kept just pulling her off the empties and sending her on, pattin her up when she treed a coon

It has alot to do with genetics, some dogs are track dogs that tree and some dogs are tree dogs that will track. Some you can help with a switch and some will be SLICK TREEING IDIOTS all their lives.

ok fellas he is a english dog, if u click on the link below you will see him. he has only seen one caged coon. he is not a idoit. he has ton of smarts. he is a good pup. i was not saying that he is slick treeing all the time. some of the coons around here have been hunted a good bit and they get smart. a coon will tap a tree and keep running. we have a thin coon population around here. we dont shoot out alot around here. all i was asking was how to train a dog to tell the difference between a tapped tree and the one he goes all the way to the top. he has treed maybe 10 times total. he has spilt treed 3 times and had the meat, maybe treed with other dogs 4 times, and the rest he just have came up a few yards short. i have shot out the coons he has treed to him so far. All these times i know they were hot tracks. he is doing great so far i think but i was wondering if there was a right way to correct this. he is just getting started i just wanted to fix the right way now before he does this regularly .

Yep, nothing better to teach them the coon isn't in the tree than showing them the track goes on. Leave the old dog at home and hunt it buy itself. When it trees on a slick or taped just make it go on. Most the time they will find the same track and finish it or atleast try.
I just walk on out the same direction the dog was going when it treed, tell the dog it isn't there and to come on. Then make it come on. Gets them ready for recasting too. Better do it while they are young. Need to get it off the buckets too.

i would stop hunting him on feeders. coons are there up and down one tree and then on too the next. he's showed you he can tree make him go hunt for one. just my 2 cents.

Hit your feeders early! Coon are moving an hour before it gets dark. Sounds to me like you are hitting your spots after the coons have been there for a while... up one tree, down, up another, over to the feeder, etc. Try to get him on the hot easy one's until he's doing it right and THEN get him in the timber without feeder buckets.

are you missing a bark and rushing him up give him a few min.
and see mine will scream out when he hits a tree but when he
doubles a chop you can call him.i would keep the old dog around
if she was acurate like a check dog.

This is a young dog. I think at times people try to make more of working with a dog than there is. After doing this a little, I got to the point where when a dog is this young, I take it out, cut it loose and I want it to get treed. When I get there, there is either a coon in the tree, or not a coon in the tree. If there is a coon, provide reward, if there isn't provide a mild punishment at first and work your way up if it doesn't get better. That is really all there is too it at this point. Trying to figure out why how and what every move a dog makes means is really an effort in futility and at the end of the day, what does it matter "why"....you need to focus on the end result and adjust accordingly.

he's really too young to get whooped, shoot out the ones he's right, and just scold him (if you can yell at him over his barking), pull him off... let him know he wasnt right on the "tapped" tree's.

Remember this is a seven month old pup. I think the more time you give the youngster by himself in the woods where there naturally is plenty of coon the better off you will be. If you ever get him to track and tree one without any help you have a good start. A coon knocked out to him now and then won't hurt but you don't have to do it every time. After you get him going good you can put him with other dogs that are not mean. One by himself is worth ten following another dog.
