Guess I should explain some things for those who may remember me.
I didn't mean to stir up the past in a bad way when I first posted this. I was just browsing through some of the past posts about people I used to know trying to catch up on things and saw something that just rubbed me raw and I responded....then I saw that it was a post that was several years old. I'm pretty thick skinned when it comes to people being critical of me, but when they lie about my friend I wanted to speak up for him.
I have been away from hounds and hunting for almost 15 years now so maybe I should explain why. It didnt hurt so bad if I didn't think about dogs or talk about dogs...so I didn't. A series of pretty sudden changes in my life starting with the birth of my son,....followed by marriage,.... followed by a really great job oppurtunity as a tool and die maker apprentice,....followed by 8-12 hr days working and night classes for an apprenticeship,.... then a crushing divorce and custody fight. I managed to get custody of my son when he was about 3 and then I felt obligated to raise him the best way I could. It's just been me and him against the world ever since.
I think he has turned out to be a fine young man in spite of being raised by a single father who spent way too much time working and taking night classes than I should have. I have tried to set a good example for my son the best way I know how....by doing! After I finished my first apprenticeship and became a journeyman tool and die maker, I decided to go back to college and started taking night classes after work. I wasn't in a hurry, and when an oppurtunity came along to enter another skilled trade apprenticeship I jumped at the chance to expand my knowlege base. I figured it was all part of setting a good example for my son by not just telling him what is possible...but, by showing him. So somehow, in the 15 years Ive been away from hound and hunting, Ive worked for the same company...finished 2 apprenticeships, making me a journeyman tool and die maker and a journeyman plumber-pipefitter-steamfitter and finished my bachelors degree in management and communication and started a business with my brother....all while raising my son as a single father.
So as you can see Ive been pretty busy and didnt have much time to chase dogs. It sure wasn't because I lost the desire. The divorce and custody fight along with my new job and night school just made it impossible to hunt...and anyone who knows me can tell you I can't stand to see a dog chained to a box very long. Before I quit I rarely missed a night. I regret that conditions in my life caused me to sell outlaw billy the kid and outlaw timber girl in the prime of their life, heck billy was only 3 and wasn't even what I consider finished yet. He and girl both had the potential to compete and win against anything...anywhere. But I sold them to two men who didnt hunt or compete like I do....and their competition records were forever stopped at the ages of 3 and 4.
I feel like I let down alot of people who enjoy the redbone breed and I didn't really explain at the time why I sold my dogs and quit hunting, I guess thats why I'm attempting to explain what happened here. Like I said, I'm new to this forum and have not posted much here but I have been getting emails and calls from alot of people who just wanted to know what happened to me so I thought maybe I should explain. My old hunting buddy and training partner Jeff Minniear has tried to get me to go hunting and talk dogs for years and the other day I guess he got through to me.
I guess I'm getting the itch to see if I can get back into it again. At this point I am just pondering if it's the right time for me. I appreciate everyone who has emailed or called and I hope to see you around at the hunts in the future. I also hope that the rest of the coonhunters out there who know Brian Wessel will defend him and his reputation if you ever hear someone saying something untrue about him. From what I understand Brian had a son and decided to step out of hound scene a few years back so he isn't around to defend against B.S. rumors that evidently popped up from some uninformed or jelous person. So his friends need to defend his honor and reputation for him till he decides the time is right for him to start hunting again...and trust me, he has thousands of friends across this country. Brian Wessel is a straight up, top notch guy in every way and you can take that to the bank! He is honest and trustworthy and generous to a fualt.
I probably should have started a new thread to explain where I have been these past years but I have been active in both walkers and redbones in the past and I used to handle, stud, and admire Casey for Brian and made alot of aquaintences because of Brian and Casey that I am thankful for, so I decided a thread about Brian is as good as any.....Shane Maxey
