4.5 months old is too young for me to do it, but its really up to you. I would rather have them be hunting age before I mess with them. For me thats around 8-10 months old depending on how they are acting. To show a coon at 5 months then have to wait another 3 months to hunt him makes me think he might forget little about what you showed him. If you start showing them coons at this age you tend to keep doing it and by the time they are ready to hunt you have showed them too many in my opinion.
This is a great post. A lot of guys will get on here and tell you about their 4,5, or 6 month old treeing coons, etc. And that is very exciting, but you can burn out a pup if you push them on coons too hard too young. I think it's important to teach obedience, like has already been said. I also like to get my pups used to being in the woods and having a good time, which it sounds like you're already doing. I got a 4 1/2 month old pup as well and haven't showed him a coon yet. I'm anxious too, but just remember good things come to those who wait.
