A dog can get a skin infection commonly called a staph infection and it can progress to the point that it covers much of the skin under the haircoat. Often the skin has an odor and many infected postules under the skin. One cause is from being severely roughed up by briars or other tough undergrowth. Untreated, it can make the dog feel like his skin is on fire the instant he brushes up against anything, even some grasses. It can be treated with the proper antibiotics and medicated shampoo. Hope this helps.
