Need Help!!

I got a 9 month old female that i been hunting she probably been out a dozen times and had ahold of about 5-6 coons. And i have had her run a coon that had jumped out of the tree and catch it on the ground. But here is the thing she wont hunt. When you turn her loose she will go about 40 yards with the dogs and turn around and come back every time. Sometimes she will get out there but never goes with the other dogs. But now when the dogs bark she sometimes go to them sometimes not. So just wanting so advice on how i can get her to go with the other dogs. I have been hunting her 4-5 nights a week and if i dont take her she raises all sorts of cane. So what im asking is what can i do to get her to hunt and should i not hunt her as hard? Help

How hard have you been hunting her? How many dumps, how far do they run each dump, how much time a night and how many nights a weak?

I would quit hunting her with other dogs, its not doing her any good anyway.

Take her out in a good woods and walk her, at some point she will stumble on an easy coon.

Shes young, and you will probably have many bad nights before she gets it, but you will have a better dog in the end.

well see now when the dogs bark she goes to them but then come back. and i know she will run a hot coon and she will run and tree a drag, all be scent and believe she would start pretty quick if she would just get out there. Cause we dont have alot of coon and a dog has to hunt to find one.

Josh is Very Much Right !! Just Keep "Taking her on Walks" Just try not to expect anything out of her, Then One night Something Will Happen !!

Might try takeing her with a dog that will range in the day time too. That makes a lot of differance to them some times.
It is a security and confidence thing to get them out away from you. So anything you can do to build up that confidence will help. I have the problem with most of mine becouse I teach them to come and make them stay close while they are young. I have a highway 50 ft. from my front door. They have to learn to be controled and stay close when I take them out side or they are dead.
Then when I start hunting them I have to teach them it is ok to go. I take them out and let them run in pastures and on creeks as they grow to make it easier. It is just a matter of time before they go but there is things you can do to help..........

So i should like take her for walks during the day and take another dog out in the day that will go far also and what your saying is she dont trust going out there that far. Cause i know the other night when that coon came down she hunt great the rest of that drop went like 600 yards by herself .

Yep that is what I would do. She will have more confidence to go further in the day light. They will go on one dump and not on another becouse they get excited and forget about you. Just like a kid. They get excited and will go anywere. Then when the excitement is over they look around and say "were am I". Dogs are no differant. You just have to get it more comfortable out there away from you and more excited about the thought of looking for a coon. Things ar not as spooky in the daylight and you are just as likely to tree a coon in the day sa you are at night.

I just recently gave up on a dog that was very much like you describe, mine had all the tools and was coon crazy but most nights he seemed happy to stay pretty close. I tried all the things that were suggested on here and more. I think sometimes if a pup is taken with older dogs and you let them get in on the action at the tree they get the idea that if they hang out with you that you will take them to the tree and they will get rewarded. The moral here is if they dont do the work dont let them touch the coon. What ever you do dont try to run him off, if they dont wanna go you cant make em and you will just end up with a dog that hides from you just out of sight. Remember they are all different and what works on one might not work on the next
If i had it to do over with mine i would take him to the woods and sit on a log and let him get bored enough to go but im not a patient enough trainer. Good luck with your pup.

That is what I do is sit on the tail gate a lot but I read a conversation a couple of the guys that handle dogs in some of the real big hunts. One was saying he tried sitting in the truc like the other sujested and it worked well. So I tride it and it does work pretty good and pretty comfortable too. LOL

Its always the same with these dog problem questions...

There is no cookie cutter approach to this. Some things can be fixed, some cant.

For crying out loud, the dog is 9 months old.

Should had quit after the second drop. After she goes all the way and you get what you want stop. Confinement breeds energy, energy breeds range. Don't let her out every time and if she comes back put her on leash or in the box. Don't let her go more than every other drop no matter what she wants to do for a while and don't even take her more than once every 4-5 days. Atleast that is what I would be going with her........ Oh and when she goes all the way be sure to tie her were she can get to the trunk of the tree or hold her on lead there and pet the crap out of her for a few minutes..................Let her know were the fun spot in the woods is.....

So your saying hunt her once a week and when she goes say 100 yards and comes back load her up and not let her back out till the 3rd drop or so?

Every 4-5 days and yep if she comes in keep her in the box. I would do it in the day time more for a little while. If you wouldn't go out side and play as a kid and your mom made you stay in the closet till you were ready to go play. How long do you think it would be before you wanted to go play..............If you have a small pen at home were she can see the other dogs and can't get to them that would help too. She is young 1 dump a night is enough if she goes. That leaves her wanting more instead of sore.
At that age it should be a tease. Like one chocolate out of the box. Not the whole box and a stomach the next day. As she gets to were she wants more you can give her more but never as much as she wants. Should allways be a treat. When she gets mature she will be in good enough shape and high enough drive to hunt you in the ground but you have to build it when you start them young.
