Last Night - Coons and Cottonmouths.

I took ol' Bo out for just the 4th time since March due to him losing his voice. Cut him about an hour after dark. Just as I turn him loose, another coon hunter pulls up (i'm hunting public land). We get to talking and I tell him to go ahead and turn em' loose if he wants. I didn't realize he was going to turn loose 5 blue dogs lol. All of his dogs cut in the same direction Bo went. A few moments later Bo gets struck in the water. He starts working a tough track. For the next 45 mins he works this track in and out of the water in some nasty buckbrush down the edge of the lake while he's got blue dogs barking to his left and to his right. 2 of the blue dogs come treed about half way between us and Bo. About 15 mins later Bo comes treed @ 631 yards according to the Garmin. Get down there and start shining. As I'm squalling I catch eyes absolutely flying down the the tree! I had to put my bright light on him to stop him from jumping out. I patted him on the head and headed back to the truck. It was HOT!

As I was walking out I passed by a mud hole full of water. I looked over and there sat an ol' cottonmouth coiled up on the edge of water. Now snakes don't bother me, but I figured I would make it a little safer for my dogs. One less to bite them. I found a good sturdy log and made the world a little safer lol

He did a great job. It always makes you feel good when a dog picks up right where he left off after a long layup, but man, am i ready for the winter!!

Kill 'em all!!!!!! Having been bit twice it gets tougher and tougher on me to go in the swamps after dark. It is tough enough in the daytime. I dont spare any. I much prefer to coon hunt in the winter though.

Dang, I've never been bit, and I sure don't won't to. Had some close calls, even had a cottonmouths come at me 2 different times while trying to kill em'.... not cool. I would rather not hunt near water in the summer, but that is just cruel to do to a dog. It's amazing that none of my current dogs have been bit. I can't tell you how many cottonmouths I have walked up on coiled up along the edge of the water. My dogs have learned to hunt the edge of the water this time of year.... kinda scary.
