I like the ones that have a loop handle and carbide sharpeners. Can get them at Walmart or Gander Mountain for about $10. Work good, last a couple of years.

I just made me a coon field skinning kit at the beginning of season. Coons are so much easier to skin when they are still warm and lighter carrying out of the woods.

I got a choke chain with a snap on 1 end I use as a gambrel, a Schrade Old Timer Gunstock Trapper pocket knife, a tail stripper, and a Sterling Classic Sharpener.

http://www.fntpost.com/Categories/F...ife+Sharpeners/

The whole thing weighs very little, and as i said those warm coons peal so much easier.

I just can't bring myself to get a Havalon. I have never been impressed with scapel blades, and i haved used many extensively. They just don't hold an edge, and the blades are too flimsy. That and the fact that I prefer not to carry them into the woods.

We usually pull ours right under the tree while they are warm, the best for me is a plain old box cutter, blades are cheap, light to carry and pretty hard to stab yourself.

Dave

U could skin at least 12-15 coon per blade and mine came with 15 extra blades for free

The best knife combo

Guys, The best knife is a cheap one that has softer steel and the way to sharpen them is to use a mill bastard flat 2 sided file. That burr will cut a coon hide quick and slick and won't cut human flesh real bad if ya mess up. Ya need a piece of 1/8 " nylon cord about 3 feet long and tie 2 loops, one in each end, tail stripper and a cheap locking fold up knife!! When warm, I can hang a coon and skin one in 2 , minutes or so. These hard bladed knives are nothing but a pain in the rear. Trust me, I have skinned a bunch of'em in my days. When I was in high school, I skun out coon for ole Levi Fox here in Salem,Ohio. He was the main fur buyer back then in the area. Big money back then!! Just try skinning with a burr edge on a knife and you'll never go back!!Couple swipes of the file on both sides and your ready to rock. JMO!!

Lately I been coon hunting with a guy who is a professional meat cutter. He gave me an "Edge Maker" sharpener to try. He buys them by the case to keep his knives at the shop in top shape. It is a little big to fit in my pocket, but has two pair of steels, and puts a pretty nice edge on a knife.
