yotes attacked last night

last night had a bad night after 2 drops went to a new area cut my dog she got across a brook and couldnt hear her, so i drove around to the oher side of the peice where i heard her treeing good so i started into her. walking threw the peice i got about 100yrds from her and i heard her fighting. i thought maybe she got it in the rock pile? well then i hear the the yote start to growl and snarl so i went running in and the yote had her on her back. i went running over yelling with a stick and actualy had to hit the yote wich was about the size of a sheapard prob 80lbs , with the stick to get it to go away from her it only trotted on 15yrds and circle us. so i leashed her up and yelled at it and was walking back to the truck watching it circle us, then i started yippin and 3 more yotes joined it. got back to the truck and went home ive never had that happen usaly i scare them off and they dont come back these ones didnt care anyone ealse have somthing like this happen? my dogs fine minus a couple scratches she wanted to go back in after the yote.

I had them circling me and a friend of mine one night. He led the hounds and I was walking with my pistol in hand and a big stick LOL. We didn't have no trouble from them they were just following us yipping and carring on, but I think it was because we got close to a den. Other than that I've not really had no problems from them coon hunting. I did have one rush in on me one night walking out from deer hunting. I shot it at point blank with a .30-06 and it ran off yelping and crying.

Where you at in MA? Reason I ask is we're in Wrentham and happen to have one REALLY big yote here... looks like a hybrid. All ours are pretty large(compared to other areas of the country)...but he have one bigger, redder one... been around for years now.

Hate to hear you had this happen...REALLY glad you were right there. Glad your dawg wanted to go back at the yotes since she probably didn't get frightened off hunting. Get in touch with the state to be sure they are aware of this... We don't hunt here.... so we don't have to worry about our dogs. Tantheath Hunt Club hunts the yotes and foxes across the street from us(on horseback) and they keep the yotes scared of the hounds... they dont kill any but scare them. I also know they changed the yote season in MA to allow more to be killed... forget thedetails cause I 'm an airhead and we dont actively hunt(just kill stuff on our farm that goes for the chickens...)
Anyway, HATE to hear about this... scare them, KILL them if you can etc....
Heather

YES they really are that big!

Before everybody rips Walkerman101 about an 80 pound coyote, you better know what you are talking about. I live in NH and spend my winters calling coyotes. The biggest one to date is 88 pounds, I almost did not shoot it because it was so big, I figured it had to be a domestic dog. The next largest was 69 pounds, shot in Mass.

I know that guys out west are gonna say "BS" because their coyotes on average are 25 pounds, tiny in comparison to ours.

Walkerman101...I think this is Matt.....right? Sorry that I was not there with you. Goose loves to brawl with coyotes, it would have been a lot different outcome. I think it is a payback for when they ganged up on him when he was 1 year old.

Y'all may be dealing with the wolf hybrids or coydogs. We have a lot of coydogs here in the south. I have seen trapped yotes that had a head like a bulldog. Dont know which way they cross but they do.

That is exactly right. The are a cross with the red wolf. They have a beautiful fur on them. In fact I had the two largest case tanned and they are hanging on my wall (to my wifes disgust)

Rochester...

... hope everyone has a great time! Good luck finding those coon! Been having a ton around our house this week! LOL... we have the mulberries JUST turning pinkish now AND my bluedawg has pneumonia so he's been real quiet... the coons must think he's gone! Just be careful out there, Matt and at least carry some sort of club.
Frank.... Goose could CRUSH the yotes... It is amazing to me how many people DO NOT believe the size of our yotes here in New England. I know one hybrid in the area was from a cross with a big husky (whichever the BIG ones are) that had escaped yrs ago (she was caught, pup was not)... That sucker was HUGE and animal control tried and tried to catch him... We have gotten a few game cam pix this yr that kinda freaked me out... this one very red yote is just SO tall compared to the others... much more wolf like. So far we are VERY lucky they steer clear of us and our dogs. They also do NOT go after any of our live chickens like the darned rotten little tiny red foxes do They yotes DO come for stinky chicken carcasses at the game cams though...LOL. They have aLOT of good stuff to eat around here, apples from the orchards are a big hit, lots and lots of bunnies and of course all the new people moving to the "country" lose their kitties.... The feral cats are too smart for the yotes though.
Yotes.... keep em scared!

Good luck to all of you at Rochester! Heather

I always carry in NH, but when you cross the border into the communist state of Mass...LOOK OUT, they have some really odd laws.

Carrying gives you that "comfortable" feeling.

This time of year it is illegal to shoot yotes at night, but if it was between me getting in trouble and my dogs life...it would appear I would get the fine.

I seen the results of a yote attack on my neighbors male dog, I had to go put him down. It was horrible! Yotes are open season here all year round. We never had one come into our dogs, but we have heard them and others have had trouble with them. Iffn we see one, it will be bye bye yote. They are nothing but trouble!

I carry a good machette and a pistol most of the time but allways have one or the other. Oh I have a hunting knife hanging on my vest at all times too. Dad tought me a long time ago not to cross creeks and rivers with out something to cut my way out of a trotline with.
The machette works good on dillers too. lol

I have a conceal carry and have had to shoot a yote charging us out hunting. I feel the same way I'll take the fine over getting in bind and wishing I had more than a stick to guard my life with.

The amazing thing is that coyotes are cowards in daylight. We hunt them with Running Walkers (these aren't very big dogs) and the coyotes will run and run and run all day long. But when night falls, the coyotes turn on the dog. I have seen one of the hounds end the track and go running by us back to the truck when darkness fell and the yotes started yipping

Yotes smell?

I've had them follow me & dogs, yipping and howling. I had a Black & Tan several years ago that wanted to go check them out so I put him back in the dogbox.
Do they smell like DOGS only stronger? Do they smell worse than some possums?

Yotes...

They smell terrible ... not like a dog at all as far as I am concerned. As far as size, they run a little larger here in Minnesota too (Compared to the western coyote) ... biggest one that I personally know of was one that my buddy shot several years ago ... weighed in at 63 lbs. I have seen a couple that I would swear weighed 70 lbs, but no way to prove it.
Ive never had them actually attack one of my dogs, but, I have had them circle and move in on us while hunting a cornfield ... we actually had a shot at one that was only about 30 ft down the corn row ...... Wish they'd put a bounty on the darn things .... !

THIS WAS IN DECEMBER. THE SMALLER ONE ( FEMALE ) HER HIDE LOOKED GOOD, WITH THE EXCEPTION THE 27 CALIBER BULLET DID TO HER NECK.

yotes stink all the time. every yote but 1 i have trapped stunk. if u think 1 circling u is bad... have 6 of them at one time come in on u and the dog. u wonder why the dog dont shoot out like it normally does. she just stands there wehre u unhooked her and her hair raises and u here yip yip yip yip yip yip and then sploosh in the river they are and start walkin back out of the woods and they are around u and ur b/f is in the truck 3/4 of a mile away BUT PEOPLE are outside and scream and run... then a lil 9 year old kid on a 4wheeler saves ur life.

the only viable cross with the coyote is the red wolf they can not cross with the domestic dog or the gray wolf here in the north east most yotes are carrying red wolf dna and are larger ad legier than the western wolf our dnr takes samples of harvested yotes and has been doing so for a while and found most eastern yotes to be crossed with the red wolf i have seen the eastern coyote in many color from blond to red to black even seen picture of one with white markings.
my whole life i have heard the term coydog but sinse dna they say impossible to cross with any thing but the red wolf.
by the way a lighted collar on a dog will keep the coyotes from attacking them try it it works also a bell on the collar helps but have been told if coyotes have enough contact with dogs wearing bells they lose the fear of bells
