WENT TO LOCAL HUNT LAST NIGHT.THEY HAD TROUBLE FINDING QUIDES. I DREW CAST THEY STUCK A QUIDE ON.HAD TO DIVE AT LEAST 1 1-2 TO WHERE WE WERE TO HUNT. IS ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM? AND SHOULDNT A CLUB BE ABLE TO PUT 4 CAST OF REGISTERED DOGS IN THE WOODS? AND IF CLUBS CANT SHOULDNT THEY JUST STOP HAVING HUNTS OR AT LEAST CUT BACK ON # OF HUNTS HELD? MAYBE THEN MORE CLUB MEMBERS WOULD HELP. P.S. THE HUNT WAS IN GA AND I LIVE IN S.C. I COULD HAVE GUIDED QUICKER!!!! AND I LIVE ABOUT HOUR 1-2 HOURS AWAY. THEY DIDNT HAVE OUT OF STATE PERMITS.

If you drove 1-2 hours to a hunt, it wasn't a local hunt for you. Sometimes it is hard to get your own club members to show up. Most clubs have five or six people that do all the work. Unless you have tried to keep up with everything going on ( UKC paper work, lining up a MOH and show judge, making sure food is there and ready to eat,etc) then you should be happy you got to hunt. Everybody wants to get as close as possible and most clubs try to do this. Sometimes, local guys share spots, don't have enough spots, or in some cases can't take anyone with them to certain spots. Anytime you enter a hunt be prepared to go. Wherever that may be. Don't complain because in a few years you may not be able to hound hunt anyway. Enjoy the hunt, enjoy the hounds, and love the time you got to spend doing both. Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a butt. I have read way to many complaints from people on here about a universal time clock, this rule or that one needs to be changed, I had to drive to far, I got cheated. Well these are all things that are part of the sport. If you don't like them, don't hunt. If you love the sport enough, forget about them and just hunt............................

I agree 1 1/2 hours for a club hunt is alot, that being said the closest club to me is 3 hours away. The drive wouldn`t bother me if the guide has great hunting. I`d take a long drive and great hunting over a short drive and no coons.

For those that are complaining about drive time, let me ask you this: would you rather drive 10 minutes and hunt places close to roads with VERY few coons? OR would you prefer to drive an hr and be in a safe place with THICK coons? It's a UKC hunt! If you dont score coons, you DONT WIN! As the club president here, I pick guides that have coons period!

Save me the excuses. A club that can't put 4 casts in the woods without sending them 1 1/2 hours away shouldn't be putting on hunts.

I guided a cast a while back teh huntin ground was 50 miles away.I told thm if i dont do any good im not driving back to the club house.One person didnt like it to well because he already drove a couple hours.But he rode with anotehr guy it was a 3 dog cast.well it was a great hunt tthe guy said it was probaly one of his best hunts.and he didnt even win.But driving is all part of it.I tru my best to put my cast in alot of coon if I dont win I still try to do teh best job i can so someone in the cast can win I suppose you call that sportsmanship.

i'm from a small club in tn. Only a few members. We don't have many coon but can usually get you on one or two. If we couldn't guide you to a coon in less than an hour and a half we would have to close the doors . If they don't have more than 4 cast most clubs around here can have you in the woods in 30 minutes or less. Maybe we are just lucky.

Hunt entryies closed at 8 you get drawn by 830, 3 hours drive time, hunt two hours in one spot, with a 1 oclock deadline? And I didnt graduate High school!!!

It was a local hunt ive to many times before,they dont have sc permits!!!I couldnt quide. any hunt that doesnt draw 50 or more dogs i consider a local hunt.I have drove futher than this to a LOCAL or SMALL hunt.If you cant put 4 reg cast in the woods within a reasonable distance you should cut back on number of hunts or close club.Maybe there sre to many hunts and club members get burnt out.It used to mean something to have a club and host hunts!!!! And if you havent drove 1-2 hours to a LOCAL hunt you just plain dont copetion hunt!!!! Also if you dont know the difference between a local hunt and a MAJOR hunt you just PLAIN DONT GET IT!!!ps i have helped run a club and do know what it takes,any of you who knows me knows this.

Local means something different to different people I guess. Some of the clubs around here are hard pressed to find guides that don't drive an hour to hunt. They do this during the week to pleasure hunt. I hunt up to about two hours away. I guess that is the difference in living here in the mountains. I have just as many coon here, but I like to walk semi-flat land every once in a while. Don't complain about driving, it is part of the sport. When the doors start closing on these clubs you guys complain about, the sport will be over. I am sure most clubs in Ohio, Indiana, and so on can hunt more hunters and hunt closer. Crap, you can drive an hour here and only go thirty or so miles. Depends on the roads I guess. Twisty roads versus straight roads. All I am saying is this, complain and you will start to see these little "local" clubs start shutting down and you will have to drive even further to hunt your dog. I myself would rather drive a little further to support the foundation clubs and let them know their efforts are not in vain. Keep up the good work guys, and if you have to send a cast a little further and put them in good hunting, so be it. You don't have to go, you can stay at home.

If I drive a further distance from the club to hunt than I did to attend the club, something is terribly wrong.

I always wondered... if a club voted to hold an event, yet can't provide 3-4 hunting guides from membership, who is voting to hold these events?

I guided out of my local club lastnight and i am about 50 miles away. no complaints cause i put em in coon on nice safe spots. I never complain about a drive, its just part of the sport and its only going to get worse.

NCHUNTER197 Maybe we will stay at home and then your butt want have anybody to hunt with.They didnt send me far for better hunting it was because THEY COULDNT FIND GUIDES!!! I couldnt guide because they didnt have out of state permits.If i pay money to hunt i should have a decent quide not someone forced into it.

The point is having quides that want to quide.Start turning entries down.there were hunters that could have quided but didnt want to take people back to their honey holes because they were afraid hunters would come back.i dont go to hunts to have places to hunt.If your gonna have hunts you should have people willing to quide.If you dont stop holding hunts.IVE HEARD DONT CRY ABOUT THE DRIVE,WELL DONT HOLD HUNT IF YOU DONT HAVE HUNTING...

I AM NOT TAKING SIDES ARE THROWING AT ANYONE BUT WHEN CLUBS AND ASSO ELECT OFFICERS SOMETIMES. THESE PEOPLE JUST FILLING SLOTS ON A HOLIDAY WEEKEND THE OFFICERS HAVE TO MAKE AND EFFORT TO CALL AROUND TO LOCAL HUNTERS. TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE AT LEAST 10 OR 12 GUIDES LINED UP. THIS IS JUST CLUB BUSINESS AND YOUR CORRECT I KNOW CLUBS THAT HAVE TROUBLE PUTTING DOGS IN THE WOODS AND WILL TRY TO HAVE 7 HUNTS A YEAR THEY NEED TO WORK ON QUALITY AND NOT QUANITY IF THEY PUT ON 3 OR 4 GOOD HUNTS IS BETTER THAN 7 HALF RUN ONES .DONT GIVE UP GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK HUNTING.

Down here in Central Texas we are not blessed with a lot of hunting places, nor a lot of coons. But we are blessed with some great hunters. Our guys work together and usually get as many cast carriers as we need. 5 or 6 at small hunts, and 10 to 15 at our Texas Battle Royal.
Some times we have to make a few phone calls to make sure we are not hunting behind another cast or not hunting toward each other. But like I said, working together is the key.
We have 8 or 9 guys that will always carry a cast. Sometimes we have to go an hour or so, but we never have had much complaint.
Thanks to: Billy Ray Milburn, John Pace, David King, Ray Dismuks, Buddy Barrons, Albert Pena, Nick Tyner, Marcle Walker, (one of our new youngsters) Garrett Bushing, and a few others that help in a pinch. We have always made things work. (I put their names in here to give them some KUDOS!!!!! They deserve it.. LOL)
