I've used the Bayer tree and shrub and it does kill fleas well , but is marginal at best on ticks.

This year I used 10% pemethrin that you can buy at a farm supply store and it kills BOTH ticks and fleas. In the short time I've used it , I like it better so far. It is dirt cheap also and you follow the directions for mixing with water in a squirt bottle and the directions for dogs is included on the container.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has classified permethrin as a carcinogen because it causes lung tumors. Also causes chromosome aberrations in human cells.
If you're SPRAYING it on the dog, that means some will be inhaled.

I don't even dilute the permethrin I use 3cc from a siringe right down their back every two weeks, no fleas no ticks none. Cheap Cheap

Permethrin is the same ingrediant in Bio-spot and K9 Advantix. I simply follow the instructions on the lable for dogs and have not seen a problem. I'd just ad , if you don't feel safe with it , don't use it..... Here's more links with some info on it.

Here's the instructions on the lable for dogs.
Kill Fleas & Ticks On Dogs - dilute 1 Part Concentrate To 99 Parts Water (1.28 Ounces Per Gallon) (0.05%). Using Protective Gloves (mitts), Wet The Animal By Dipping Or Spraying. Reapply Every 30 Days, If Necessary.

do Not Use On Dogs Under 12 Weeks Old. Consult A Veterinarian Before Using This Product On Medicated, Debilitated, Aged, Pregnant Or Nursing Animals. Sensitivities May Occur After Using Any Pesticide Product For Pets. If Signs Of Sensitivity Occur, Bathe Your Pet With Mild Soap And Rinse With Large Amounts Of Water. If Signs Continue, Consult A Veterinarian Immediately.

Permethrin is also found in LICE medication (Nix and etc) that is used mostly on children.

I wenr through my kennel one time a few years ago & applied Bio Spot. Two of the dogs got sick & several lost hair where the Bio Spot had been applied. The reason I like T&S is because it's not expensive, can be applied once a month & IT WORKS. As for ticks,
I use a cattle ear tag threaded onto the collar & the ear tags last for MONTHS.

As someome who used work in the pesticide industry, I can shed some light on labels.

What you have to understand on pesticides is that the labels list 2 things concerning the ingredients:

The Active (which states what it is and what percentage) and the Inert Ingredients (which doesn't state what they and the percentage).

But alot of times, there is still posion in those inert ingredients.......even though you think only the active is the main substance, legally it means the inerts are not the registered active ingredient.

Sometimes the ingredients in the inerts are more toxic that the main ingredient.

The U.S. Congress passed the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act which allowed manufacturers confidentiality on issues they claimed would otherwise make them vulnerable to market competition. Inert ingredients became protected as trade secrets.
