Despite Obama canceling NDoP activites at the White House, we will still recognize it and make sure EVERYDAY is a NDoP at hour house.
A little history lesson.....
History of the National Day of Prayer
1775 The First Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer.
1863 Abraham Lincoln called for such a day.
1952 Congress established NDP as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Truman.
1988 The law was amended and signed by President Reagan, to be the first Thursday in May.
2010 U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb ruled that the National Day of Prayer is "unconstitutional."
National Day of Prayer, May 6, 2010
On May 6, 1982, Ronald Reagan offered these words: "Today, prayer is still a powerful force in America, and our faith in God is a mighty source of strength. Our Pledge of Allegiance states that we are 'one nation under God,' and our currency bears the motto, 'In God We Trust.' The morality and values such faith implies are deeply embedded in our national character. Our country embraces those principles by design, and we abandon them at our peril. Yet in recent years, well-meaning Americans in the name of freedom have taken freedom away. For the sake of religious tolerance, they've forbidden religious practice in the classrooms. The law of this land has effectively removed prayer from our classrooms. How can we hope to retain our freedom through the generations if we fail to teach our young that our liberty springs from an abiding faith in our Creator?"
National Day of Prayer 2010
Date: 5/5/2010 9:57:26 AM
Tomorrow, May 6, 2010, the 59th annual National Day of Prayer will take place. The theme for this year is "Prayer for Such a Time as This" and is based on Nahum 1:7 which states: "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him."
The National Day of Prayer has faced opposition this year. First, a U.S. District Judge in Wisconsin ruled on April 15th that the Day of Prayer was unconstitutional. That case was brought by a group of atheists and agnostics called the Freedom From Religion Foundation, and argued that the National Day of Prayer violated the separation of church and state. The district court's decision will be appealed by the American Center for Law and Justice, which represented more than 30 members of Congress in the lawsuit.
Next, a rumor posted on FaceBook that President Obama had canceled the Day of Prayer went viral. However, Obama only canceled the White House service recognizing the National Day of Prayer, he did not cancel the event itself.
Shirley Dobson verified this fact on the National Day of Prayer website, saying:
I want to emphasize that the 2010 National Day of Prayer will continue as planned. … Whether it’s our national observance on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., or the many thousands of gatherings scheduled elsewhere, we will come together on May 6th for what I’m confident will be a powerful time of intercession. It is our understanding that President Obama will be signing a proclamation again this year, and we are hopeful that governors and government officials will also do so as they have in the past.
President Obama did indeed sign a proclamation in honor of the National Day or Prayer, which you may read in its entirety here.
Despite these obstacles, the National Day of Prayer is going forward with services planned for tomorrow. Franklin Graham is the 2010 Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, and Shirley Dobson will be joining him to lead the nation in prayer in Washington, D.C. The National Observance will be broadcast live on GOD TV, which is found on DirecTV channel 365, beginning at 9:00 a.m. EST and ending at 12:00 noon EST.
You may watch a video of Franklin Graham discussing the National Day of Prayer below.
