Not Arkansas, unless you move up around Conway, arkansas. There are some big bottoms around Southern Arkansas but no jobs.

the oil boom up here kinda stinks. unless you have an oil job you cant afford some of the prices they are charging up here. and I am not interested in an oil job where I need to be away from my family every week. I wanna make an honest living wage but some of that stuff isn't worth not being home all the time. don't really hate ND just looking or a change up. I would rather move to Alaska but wife said absolutely not. but she is up for a southern state

Kansas City, Mo Area

We have good coon hunting, lots of clubs within a hour. KC's economy is good, ain't to hard to get a $20 per hour job if you look around. Give me a holler if you move this way.

I have lived in arkansas all my life, born in pine bluff. If you kids choose carefully, public schools are vastly different from 1 district to the next. Its the only state with both an elk season and an alligator season. Lots of coon but the hardwood is being replaced with pine thickets.

I alwys wanted to live in idaho...

Don't move to southern AR if your looking for big wages. Coon hunting is rough. Alot of pine thickets. Tough to get into a lease that has hardwoods on it. East AR has more hardwoods and corn and rice fields

I'll throw in my two cents.

Move to Southern Illinois. Clay or Wayne counties or south. Oil field is fixing to boom down there and will be centered in Wayne county.

Pro's:

*Good hunting. Plenty of coon, river bottoms and fence rows to hunt. You can just about turn loose anywhere. A few guys are jerks about land but not many. Ground isn't all leased up to deer hunters.

*No poisonous snakes, no gators. I think that is pretty clear.

*Winters are fairly mild. They go thru cold snaps and get some snow but generally you can hunt about all winter long.

*Summers aren't bad. It'll get up in the 90's for a little while but will generally cool off enough to go hunting. This summer has been phenomenal for hunting. I was down there 4th of July weekend and needed a light jacket. That isn't the norm though.

*People are nice. They'll make you feel at home.

*Plenty of big hunts close. Flora Coon Club holds several big hunts a year and there are others and other registries that have hunts in that general area. You will be 6 hours (or so) from Autumn Oaks and the same from Winter Classic.

*Smaller hunts. You can be at a Nite Hunt every single weekend down there and not drive too far.

*Cost of living isn't too high. I was renting a bigger house for about half of what I rent for here in Michigan. Of course I am in a bigger town but still, it was cheaper there.

*Schools are safe and clean and you'll know all your kid's teachers.

Cons:

*Finding a decent paying job sometimes can be an issue. I had a CDL so I never had a problem. If you can drive a truck or tractor I know of farmers I can hook you up with that will hire you this fall. I'm talking guys who farm 25,000+ acres that need hands. They don't pay too bad. Several factories in Flora as well. They don't start out too great but if you stay on for a year or so you'll get some pretty good raises.

*You're gonna have to drive. Probably a lot like you are there, if you want to take your wife to Red Lobster or anything halfway "fancy" (don't jump on my I know RL isn't that fancy) you're driving. There are some medium sized towns (like Effingham) you can get to in 40 minutes but Evansville or St Louis are only 2 hours.

Good luck in your search. If you're thinking about moving there pm or email me and I'll give you some contacts. Dad (Jim Frederick) is the president of Flora Coon Club and he knows everyone in town.

I just moved from Virginia Beach,Va. to the Shenandoah Valley near Staunton,Va. I absolutely love it. I been wanting to move to the western side of the state for years. You got national forests to the east and west. Both mountainous.

Compared to North Dakota, yes, I am. Some of these people in Michigan think I'm the biggest hillbilly they ever met!

Culturally Southern Illinois is much more like Kentucky than it is Northern Illinois. Many "southerners" who visit are surprised. They associate Illinois with Chicago, just like most people associate the whole state of Georgia with Atlanta.

I actually went to college in Knoxville and lived there for several years. The city is great and the people are great too. I have a sister and an aunt who still live down there and it is always nice visiting them.

The major problem is the hunting stinks. I hunted a couple times down there. You can get into coon but they are real spotty and you have to be willing to walk up and down the mountains.

Good thing about Southern Illinois is it is fairly centrally located. Not far enough south for snakes & gators or the weather to be too unbearable in the summer. Also not far north enough for the winters to be too extreme either. There are 4 distinct seasons though. I'm pretty partial to it down there but I did spend over 25 years there!!
