over curled tail Question

In the past, I have had 3 dogs (1 plott and two blues -all unrelated) that had an over active tail curve. Instead of being saber-like, they were more curled, to the point where they touched their back and curled to the side. All three were" PR" dogs with supposedly great blood (not going to get into specifics). Does anyone know what causes this?? I figure it is probably genetic- I would never breed a dog like this and am not much of a show person anyway. If the dog didn't make a great meat dog- cull time. Anyone else had this problem?

Biggest problem is; Sometimes the tail is curled so tight that back feet are raised up and dog has no traction.

Curled Tail

Casey,
I agree with Laura, it is genetic. Don't see that it hurts anything other than whether you mind it or not. I believe in the breed standards it is considered a fault if benching dog.

I've yet to see a dog that doesn't have some faults, if the dog performs the way you like who cares. I've known people to give away good dogs because they don't like their looks, you are the one feeding it so it's up to you. Good luck!

curled tail

Your buddy pulls up just before dark ready for a hunt. He starts telling you about his new power house tree dog he just purchased. Your buddy jumps the dog out of the truck, the dogs' tail is twisted straight over his back (almost deformed it's so tight), I would say that most folks wouldn't take their 10 month old pup who has just started treeing good with the dog.

I don't like a razor tailed, dirt slinging hound. One night on a hunt I drew three males that had the high tail diesease. After the three finished expressing their manhood, the gravel, dirt, leaves and grass appeared to have been tilled with a Kubota. Man it sure was fun to strike and tree my hound while this was going on.

The ol hound that lies around all day with his eyelids toughing each other and his tail drooped down between his legs will be my pick.

Dang blueticker, you just described my ol' hounds to a "T". That'd be my pick too.

Curled Tails

It is a genetic problem that may come from not having an all hound backround (regardless of what the pedigree says). But it is a minor flaw. I recently had a very good coonhound female I called Curly for 8 years. I probably looked at 1000 coon she treed. She was an excellent reproducer. I sure didn't like the curled tail and she did put in in some of her pups, but I loved the way she treed coon and reproduced and would take another one like her anytime I can get one. By the way, she has produced several Bench Champions and Grand Bench Champions and there is a bear dog out of her that is the best looking English I ever saw, bar none. Ask the Lemmones in Oklahoma about their Twist dog out of Curly, he is just 1 of the Grand Bench Champions out of her. And, more important, she reproduced coon and bear dogs!

Only if the curl tail hound in question won't go hunting and can't smell his own butt ....then it might be cur blood.

over curl tail(screw-tail)

screw tail is a hereditary trait found in many dogs. I had a black and tan that had a tail that would almost make a complete circle when he "strutted" it is an undesireable trait for showing dogs but don't hurt the performance any. My dog was out of a litter of 10 I believe and was the only one with a screw tail. If you breed a dog with a screw tail all the pups may have it, or one , two, or none may have it. You just can't tell. My dog was out of two straight tailed dogs.

I think if you go back far enough in the pedigree, they're all foxhounds anyway aren't they?

Anyway my friend had an old male with a curved over tail that died several years ago. (He wasn't mean.) He had a female out of him, and she just a had a 1 puppy litter. It's a 5 week old male with a curved over tail, just like grandpa. He's really excited about this pup.

I still like a nice sabre tail.
