I took a short trip to Fl last week to visit my folks, Dads 82 and has been pretty sick, in and out of the hospital in the last few months. While there my brother talked me into going with him on a 2 day south fl hog/turkey hunt. Long story short, we killed 9 hogs, no turkeys. I killed a big hog, our host couldn't find his scale so we guessed it at over 300lbs. They said it was trophy class and I'm thinking about getting the head mounted. My kids raised a few fair hogs years ago, this dude was bigger.
Any guess' on his weight???

Doug, it is hard to tell as you guys are standing behind him. But he looks like he would go in the 250 # range.

I would of guessed that 300# was light but one thing for sure. It is going to take a big pit.........

We definately have some big hogs here in Florida. I'm thinking he is pushing close to 300lbs. Is that about 3 to 3.5 inch tusks he has??

Doug,

First I need to say Congratulations. He is a fine hog.

I have had first hand dealings with you in the past, and I believe you treated me more than fair. I would be very happy to deal with you again in the future.

As for my previous post, it was not meant to be negative in any way. I am a hog hunter. I was simply trying to lend my personal opinion having years of hog hunting to my resume. I weigh about 1/2 of the hogs we catch. Generaly they are alive. We turn them loose after we take pics. That being said we do hunt some properties that require us to kill the hogs before we transport them. If we need meat, then we stick them with a knife. I should add that I have been a State of Florida nuisance trapper for about 3 years. I often get called upon to remove hogs from areas that they are destroying (Golf courses, housing developments, and retail locations).

As I stated, because the hog is not directly beside anything in the picture, it makes it hard to be accurate 100%. That being said, based off of my experience, it is very fair to say that he is between 250 and 300 pounds. As for the outfitter telling you he is the biggest, he very well may be. Of course he may also be pumping you up, so that you will book with him the next time you are in town. I don't know where you went, but I can tell you that a lot of guides will slightly stretch the truth on weight so that you spread the word of how good that outfitter is. I'm just being honest. As for the teeth, it looks as though the hog only has one cutter. The other side looks broke off. I may be wrong about that. As for length, it does not apear to be 3". It looks closer to 2" give or take a little either way.

This boar we recently caught had 2 7/8" on one side, and 2 1/2" on the other. That was per the standard tape measure used.



Again, I am simply trying to fill in the blanks for you. Very nice hog either way.

Hope your father gets to feeling better. IT is tough as our parents age... My dad died years ago but my Mum is 90 now and... when she gets sick it is always a bit scary... Prayers for your dad.

Josh, although we've never met in person I consider you a friend and in no way did I take your post in a negative way,
I appreciate your knowledge, experience and honest opinion.
The guy we hunted with was not an outfitter, just a friend of my brothers.
He had all his cutters, I left the head in my parents freezer so I can't get a measurement on the tusks but they are not as long as the one you have pictured, those are pretty dangerous looking!
I think my kids fair hogs had to be 230lbs to make the cut and not over 280lbs if I remember correctly, he would have been on the top end of that scale.

I too consider you a friend. Along with BigCastle, I hope you dad gets to feeling better. 9 hogs in a couple of days is a good run. These dang turkeys down here can be hard to get after at times. I've killed my share, but the turkeys are way ahead in the count.

I'd be interested in hearing what they (teeth) measure once someone takes a tape to them. Anything over 1 1/2" is good in my book. They're all fun to catch. For the record, most taxidermists use "fake" teeth on the mount. If you like how his hide looks, you may's as well have them 5". LOL!!!!!!!!

I never hunted any other than when I done seminars in Texas they would give me a hog hunt on horse back once a year. We are just getting them around here on the lakes and rivers in the last 10 years or so.
My guess was just compairing it to the guys standing beside it. Know next to nothing about them so it was just a wild guess. It is sure a nice looking hog and so is the other ones tusks.
We just ate small ones in West Texas. They cought the big ones and sold them to the pay to play ranches. Can't figure why anyone would pay to hunt them. The ones I know that get them on there land would pay you to shoot them. They are shooting them out of helicopters tryint to get rid of them. I don't think they ever will.
Had a guy fro louisiana come in the shop today and tell me how to cook one in the ground. So I am going to go kill me one before long........
What is a good rub to put on them before cooking?

Josh, I'll let you know when I get a good measurement on his tusk. I have a feeling that I'll be heading back down there soon.
I'd sure like to get one of those Oceola's, might have to wait until next spring at this point. If I ever get the chance, I'd love to see those blueticks in action on a hog.

I have a hog tape myself. However, when you are dealing with feral pigs, it does not work out correct. There is a big difference on the confirmation of a show hog vs a wild hog. Show hogs are built very thick in the rear (ham, sausage, and such). Whereas a wild hog is very slender in the rear. Most of there muscle is on the front end. Same animal, but very different beast.

After the first weekend of turkey season down here, the old smart gobblers know not to listen to anything that talks. To many calling too much these days. It is different if you go where they are not pressured. Good luck with you quest to take down as Ted Nugent would say "the THUNDER CHICKEN". Man, I personally always just said "wild turkey". Oh well, I don't have my own TV show.

The blues will be ready when you're ready to get your hands dirty (maybe even wet).

THAT IS A BIG PIG.

my son just got a cur dog and a pitbull, and started trying to hog hunt with some of his friends. they have pit bird dog crosses. been to fla, south carolina, and here in georgia. six months they have only got 1 small pig. maybe they need to try some hounds as they have to walk all their dogs.
