Maybe this is a dumb question........?

Well, I always see and here everybody talk about a gyp or brood female or a bitch. What the heck is the difference. I know they are different terms that mean different things, But I have no idea what they mean. I am fairly new in coonhunting and have not owned a female untill about 3 days ago when I got a female pup. I was just wondering? Thanks in advance!

J Hall

All of these terms refer to female dogs. I think when people use the term brood female, they are referring to a dog used primarily for breeding purposes. A dog that is activley hunted is referred to as a hunting dog, and if the dog is not being hunted, only bred, it is called a brood female. They are all females, some hunted(possibly bred), others used for raising pups. Hopes this does not confuse you. You won't know if you don't ask.

I myself,

generally use the term gyp to refer to a young female that has not been bred yet. The term bitch usually refers to a female that has been bred at least once. If it is precceding by brood then she is most likely a puppy machine and not in the woods on a regular basis.
I like hunting and handling females so I am liable to call any of them bitch at any given moment, of course it usually has nothing to do with their gender though. LOL

Terms

A gyp is a female dog. A bitch is a female that pisses you off while hunting. A brood bitch is a female that pissed you off too many times while hunting, but she has good breeding, so you decide that surely you'll have better luck with pups out of her than you've had with her. That's my take.

I'd stick to the male and female terminology. "Bitch" is an offensive term. The uncouth often preceed it with another offensive term. Stick to male and female.

I agree.
My females will always be " females ".

Might be my " old female " or my " young female " , but they will be female.

I haven't cared for that term since I was a kid. Must be my dad didn't like it either , cause his females were " females " also.

offensive????????

quote:
..... "Bitch" is an offensive term. Stick to male and female.
what is offensive about it? a "bitch" is what it is... look it up in the dictionary........... the animal rights nutcakes reference a female dog as "bitch" ...... what does your vet call females? if bitch is offensive, does the same hold true for gyp (is it also offensive)??????

sure if someone calls you a son of a bitch then yes that is OFFENSIVE.... common since will tell you if somebody is using it offensively or just talking about a female dog what she is....

For me

I never refer to my females as bitch. I know that it is a correct term for a female dog, but the word has been taken out of context, and has been used as adjectives, or nouns, and verbs, to describe so many other things. When rappers, and actors say it, they are not referring to "Bugle Ann." The word is used in connection to a prostitute, a "Slutty woman," a complaining woman, or a woman with an attitude. I never used these terms, especially around children, because, simply put, they do not know the difference. If I used that word, my kids (which are grown) would think I am curssing. It is just as easy to say female, or gyp, or brood female. I don't like to use words that I did not want my kids to use. There are probably very few people in the world that know what the word really means, and if they hear you say it, they will think you said...well........you get the point. The word "bitch" is just poor taste. You can say something else, mean the same thing, and eliminate the problem. If you do use it, don't be suprised if you hear your kids use it in connection with something else, other than a female dog.

offensive?

Some people find "In God we trust" offensive. Some people even find "Merry Christmas" offensive. Myself, I find anyone that tells me what I can or can't say or think offensive.

Merry Christmas!

I agree 100% with Mr. Edwards. My boys are old enough to know what it means, and they do. But I still don't use the word because of the context that society has put it in. My wife can't stand that word, I tell her all the time it is the proper turn for a female dog, but as Mr. Edwards states, society has turned it around so in people's minds it doesn't mean what the dictionary says. It oesn't matter to her though; because in her mind it is still a cuss word. I would venture to say the majority of people in the USA would agree with my wife if asked about it.
