Cough?

I did a quick search and found a lot of great information on this board about kennel cough...but I was wondering if someone could fill me in on the symptoms. I have a dog that lives primarily indoors (stays outside during the work day) and he started having a dry cough yesterday. Not like a "throwing up" cough, more like "clearing his throat." It's not constant-I've mostly noticed him coughing when he first wakes up in the morning, when we first go outside, or when he pulls on the leash. Other than the cough he's acting normal, same energy level, still eating and drinking the same, etc. I've also noticed a couple other of my dogs giving a few coughs when they first come out in the morning, which makes me think it could possibly be kennel cough. All are up to date on heartworm preventative, so I can rule that out. We've never had any issues with this before, so I'm not sure of the symptoms. Any thoughts?

kennel cough

that sounds like it... some will get worse before they get better and some it doesn't get ant worse than what you described... there is things you can give for comfort for them but my vet said it was virile and usually 10 days with meds and 10 without

Jessica

When Preach was a pup he developed a case of kennel cough....best way I can describe what he had was it sounded alot like a person with bronchitis coughing...he had alot of congestion along with his...dk if that is normal in all kennell cough cases or not. He was treated with antibiotics and a cough syrup...don't remember the name but the cough syrup was a similar name to the Tussin stuff they would prescribe a person.

I have never had it in my dogs but had a friend take one to a vet and it was kennel cough he said. I think it was Robitussen that they told him to give it. Just like you get for a person at Walmart and such places.

Cough

How old is the dog? Older dogs sometimes get an
enlarged heart, which causes a dry hacking cough. I
rescued a dalmation 3 yrs ago as a friend to calm down my redbone. I keep thinking one of these days she is going to keel over. she is 11 now and the coughing is not as often as a couple years ago.The enlarged heart pushes against the trachea, vet said about 1200. for operation to repair.
If she could live through the operation.

Debbie he's a little over a year old, and has always been very healthy barring a bout with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever he had last year. Thanks for the input so far everyone.
