You will if you put the pointer on the dog.

True...but it is WAY EASIER to just push the "dog" button.

Ok thanks I must have been mistaken but I thought when I was looking at a friends the distance showed in small letters on the bottom right of the screen. Not a big deal anyway.

It may have. You can put a few different things on the map screen if you change your settings. For example, I have the running watch on my map screen at the top in LARGE letters.

As Jim said, anytime you move your pointer on the map screen, it will show the distance measurement from your location and where the pointer is.

Quick tip: If you want to measure the distance your dog may be from a road or railroad tracks, on the map screen simply hit MENU and then MEASURE DISTANCE. Click on your dog by hitting ENTER when the point is on him and then point to the road or railroad tracks and hit ENTER again. The distance measurement should be in the top right hand of the screen.
