"Chipper" the Squirrel...................

I've been blessed with a wife that has the most mothering instinct a woman could possibly have.Over the years I've come home to little deer sleeping in my recliner,to baby coons curled up on my pillow,to little fox's running a marathon in the living room.I don't know of a local animal that she has'nt raised. She would always get them weaned and they would go back to the wild and over time you would'nt see them anymore.Well about 14 years ago one of our cow dogs come to the house with a baby squirrel, even the dog knew she would take care of it,that must have fell out of its nest.It could not have been very old, about 2 inches long and no hair.Well like all the rest, when it was big enough, it was time to go.This squirrel would not go,acted like he did not even like a tree. After several attemps over a few months this squirrel recieved something none of the rest never did,a name and a home.I still have'nt decided if he had a fair life or not,but he seemed to be content and happy and would not have it any other way. After refusing his nightly cheese puff I knew he was'nt feeling well and after 14 years of domestic life I buried Chipper this morning in the same area the dog found him in years earlier. My wife was bothered by losing Chipper but took it well only saying that sometimes life can give you the greatest enjoyments in the smallest things that is mostly acknowledged when its gone! Thanks for reading!

14 years for a squirrel, that surprises me. Maybe the preservatives in the cheese puffs helped him out. Did he have free run of the house or did he just live close to you and run free? Crazy what animals will do when they imprint to people.

Sorry for your loss!

Hate to hear about your loss BUT...what a wonderful life you all gave your Chipper.
My family home has a little squirrel named Chipper buried there as well. My parents and older sisters raised him before I was born and he died before I was born as well... He lived outside, had a little squirrel house in one of the big old Oaks. This is in Boston BTW He had no plans to leave "home" once he was able...hanging around in the yard, visiting the family etc...
The closest I came to raising one was bottle feeding one till it died from squirrel pox.... I am always willing to try... I was amazed how easily they take to being handled.

Bless your wife for her special ability! Heather

Great story. My aunt did the same thing with a squirrel she named T.D. He was mean to everybody but her, but he was cool to have around. He lived about that long as well.

Thanks for sharing!!
